February 2, 2012, Seoul – STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a global semiconductor company in various electronic device applications, unveiled its latest connected home platform at CES 2012, the world's largest consumer electronics show held in Las Vegas, USA.
First unveiled in September 2011 under the codename Orly, the STiH416 is the world's highest-performing connected home system-on-chip, delivering the extreme performance required to deliver amazing home entertainment experiences using a 28nm process. Integrating high-density on-chip computing, including a dual-core application processor and a dedicated graphics engine, with advanced broadband and broadcast capabilities, the STiH416 enables consumers to easily access a wide range of premium content, internet-based entertainment, and personal content. This latest device delivers a true multi-screen experience with real-time transcoding capabilities for seamless streaming across multiple devices, ranging from smartphones to tablets and large-screen televisions, while achieving exceptional performance with minimal power consumption.
Through ST’s demonstration at CES 2012, the performance of the STiH416, which supports cutting-edge digital entertainment experiences such as integrated broadcast and OTT internet content, multi-screen multimedia streaming, 3D games and TV, social video conferencing, and home automation communication with other consumer electronics devices and sensors, was clearly proven.

Equipped with advanced features, security, and even power saving capabilities, ST’s STiH416 supports the new and diverse ways people want to use the web, watch TV, and share digital content and networks with their friends from home. At the heart of the STiH416 are a dual-core ARM® Cortex™-A9 MPCore™ application processor and an ARM® Mali™-400MP quad-core graphics processor, which manage software environments such as Android, HTML5, Adobe AIR, and Qt for optimized content and application playback, while also handling advanced user interfaces, games, and 3D graphics for 3D TV. The advanced application platform provided with this device fully utilizes the advanced security features of the system-on-chip to run multiple independent applications simultaneously within a lightweight framework.
The STiH416's high-performance, flexible multimedia processing subsystem can decode multiple H.264 Full HD files as well as various video standards such as DivX, Multi-View Coding (MVC) 3DTV, and Google WebM. All of this is delivered in Faroudja™ video image quality. With powerful transcoding and encoding capabilities, this device can run HD content across multiple screens while simultaneously running video conferencing applications. The STiH416 also integrates a dedicated transport processor for seamless streaming, as well as a security processor that complies with the latest restricted reception and DRM standards.
ST has incorporated its unrivaled performance and capabilities into the STiH416 while leveraging its expertise in low-power design to achieve exceptional energy efficiency. Manufactured using low-power process technology, the device features a power-saving architecture for CPUs and GPUs in separate domains with independent voltage control capabilities. Multiple power-saving modes minimize power consumption in all operating states, ultimately reducing power consumption in passive standby mode to less than 30mW. All these features combined have made the STiH416 the world's highest-performing and most energy-efficient connected home set-top box system-on-chip.
The STiH416 is currently being sampled to industry-leading customers in 35x35mm FCBGA packages. Full-scale production is planned for the second half of 2012.
