January 26, 2012, Seoul – Infineon Technologies (Korea CEO Seung-soo Lee) has launched a new series of TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes. The new products significantly improve system robustness against electrostatic discharge (ESD), which can cause serious and potential failures in consumer electronics such as smartphones, tablets, eBooks, and other portable computers.
The new silicon device is specially designed to protect internal electronic circuits connected to external connectors such as headphone jacks, keypads, and touch displays. Generally, these external connectors are directly exposed to the external environment and can therefore serve as entry points for ESD.
Implementing Infineon's new ESD5V3L1B diodes close to external interfaces provides a low-resistance path for ESD, isolating dangerous transient energy from the IC. Each TVS diode is bidirectional, has an operating voltage of ±5.3V, and is optimized for single-line protection. The new diodes are particularly suitable for protecting audio codecs (enCOder/DECoder) and human interface devices such as keypads, keyboards, convenience buttons, and touchscreens.
Infineon's ESD5V3L1B TVS diode provides industry-leading performance for key parameters of ESD protection for electronic circuits as follows:
- Provides efficient protection performance for all ESD intensity levels through ultra-low clamping voltage and ultra-low dynamic resistance of only 0.22Ω. Infineon's diodes are approximately twice as efficient as competing products in the same category of requirements.
- Robust ESD absorption performance for minimum ±20,000V contact discharge exceeding the IEC61000-4-2 industry standard (8,000V)
- Low leakage current characteristics ideal for battery-operated equipment applications
Infineon's TVS diodes offer significant advantages for small and slim applications where size is critical. As a leading supplier of the industry's smallest TVS diodes, Infineon has developed them in packages measuring just 0.62 x 0.32 x 0.31 mm (TSSLP-2-1, equivalent to EIA0201 size) and 1.0 x 0.6 x 0.39 mm (TSLP-2, equivalent to EIA0402 size). With a package height of 0.31 mm, the new TVS diodes meet the stringent thickness requirements of modern smartphones, tablets, eBooks, and more.
