- 6.5V, 4A output DC-DC regulator with a power conversion efficiency of 96% or higher
- Includes a low-on-resistance switching FET in a compact 4mm x 4mm QFN 16-lead package
February 7, 2012 – Analog Devices ( www.analog.com ), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal processing, today introduced the ADP2164, a 6.5V, 4A output DC-DC regulator with a power conversion efficiency of over 96%. Boasting high integration, the ADP2164 regulator features an input voltage supply range of 2.7V to 6.5V and an output range of just 0.6V. It incorporates low-on-resistance switching FETs to maximize efficiency while reducing board area. The ADP2164 delivers very high efficiency in a compact 4mm x 4mm QFN 16-lead package. This new DC-DC regulator is designed for multi-rail point-of-load (POL) applications ranging from telecommunications infrastructure to industrial devices that require small size, fast transient performance, and high-accuracy voltage stabilization. Unlike other regulators that have a 5V input range, the ADP2164's maximum input voltage range is higher at 6.5V, providing additional margin in terms of safety.
Key specifications of the ADP2164 DC-DC regulator
• With a maximum input voltage range of up to 6.5V, it provides additional headroom compared to other 5.5V sources.
• Improved power efficiency and reduced heat dissipation with up to 96% peak efficiency
• Synchronous input and selectable phase shift function contribute to minimizing input ripple current and simplifying input filter design
• Implements a simple and stable startup sequence through precision enable input, voltage tracking input, and PowerGood function
• Simplified design with internal compensation and soft start features
The switching frequency of the ADP2164 can be programmed in the range of 500 kHz to 1.4 MHz or synchronized with an external clock to eliminate beat frequencies between regulators. Additionally, the magnitude of input current ripple and input capacitance can be reduced by synchronizing the two phases of the ADP2164 regulators with a 180-degree phase inversion. This regulator is based on a current-mode fixed-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM) architecture that offers excellent stability and transient response performance, and is pin-compatible with the ADP2118 5-V 3-A synchronous regulator. Designed for high-efficiency multi-rail applications, the ADP2164 operates over a junction temperature range of −40°C to +125°C.
