ST, Integrating NFC Technology into MediaTek Mobile Platform
Published2017.09.07 10:47STMicroelectronics (ST) announced that it is integrating its contactless NFC technology into MediaTek's mobile platform.
Mobile payments are expected to achieve three-digit growth rates within the coming years, driven by the rapid increase in contactless transit ticketing services in the Asia region, particularly in major Chinese cities.
The two companies are integrating ST's NFC chipset into MediaTek's mobile platform to help mobile OEM manufacturers address technical challenges such as antenna design and integration, antenna miniaturization, and BoM (Bill-of-Material) optimization, while ensuring interoperability with payment terminals located at retail locations and transit-centered areas.
MediaTek, the world's second-largest mobile handset solution provider, can now implement superior contactless performance compared to competing platforms by adding ST's technology.
Marie-France Florentin, Vice President and General Manager of ST's Secure Microcontroller Division, stated, "ST will supply NFC technology to MediaTek, providing OEM manufacturers with high-performance contactless solutions optimized for cost and integration focus with smaller antennas and reduced BoM." She continued, "ST has been providing customers with strong NFC and RFID technology for many years, and the ST21NFCD is the first device to integrate proven booster technology in the market that ST recently acquired."
Contactless applications, including mobile payments, are fundamentally implemented through NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology, as seen in contactless payment cards and payment terminals. ST's NFC chipsets or SiP (System-in-Package) solve the challenge of implementing reliable wireless connectivity at extended communication distances, enabling convenient and reliable dedicated mobile payment systems while preventing cybersecurity threats including eavesdropping and hacking.
ST's latest NFC SiP, the ST54F and ST54H, consist of the ST21NFCD NFC controller with Active Load Modulation functionality providing extended detection range, the ST33G1M2 and ST33J2M0 embedded Secure Element (eSE), and the operating system.

Mouser Electronics has announced that it supplies the ultra-low power sub-1GHz transceiver S2-LP from STMicroelectronics (ST). The S2-LP wireless chip, launched as the successor to the highly popular SPIRIT1, can be utilized in IoT (Internet of Things) applications based on features such as extended transmission range, wider selection options, ultra-low power consumption, and flexible configuration. The ST S2-LP transceiver supplied by Mouser Electronics is an ultra-low power wireless product optimized for RF (radio frequency) products operating at frequencies below 1GHz. It operates in license-free ISM and SRD (Short Range Device) frequency bands, and additional frequencies can be added through programming. This product is suitable for networked devices and supports Sigfox global network, wireless M-Bus, 6LowPAN, and IEEE 802.15.4g standards.

ST strengthens partner program connecting customers and technology experts
STMicroelectronics (ST) is strengthening its ecosystem through a Partner Program that connects customers with technical experts who can strategically support their projects. ST's new Partner Program assists design teams by enabling them to add technology, products, and services to support engineering development and reduce time-to-market for new products.
