Giga Wire, achieving 1Gbps speeds with copper wires without fiber optic cables

KT's innovative technology, 'Giga Wire,' made its debut in the U.S. market.

Giga Wire is a technology that enables internet speeds of up to 1Gbps using only copper wires without fiber optic cables. Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Boston last June to build Giga Wire, KT has begun installing Giga Wire in downtown Boston in earnest.

KT announced on the 15th (Fri) that it held a Giga Wire launch ceremony at Hibernian Hall in Boston, USA, and provided Giga Wire service to downtown Boston.

The construction of this Gigawire is in line with the significance of the Boston Digital Equity Project, a major policy promoted by the City of Boston to bridge the digital divide, and it also played a major role in resolving the concerns of Boston, where improving network infrastructure is difficult due to the many historic buildings.

As most of the buildings in Boston are over 60 years old, it is difficult to carry out city-wide in-building construction to improve network infrastructure, so the city has turned its attention to KT's Gigawire technology as a solution to this problem.

KT's Giga Wire technology has been well-received as it can improve the network environment without damaging existing buildings. The technology was highly praised, particularly for its ability to improve the internet environment in old residential areas of Boston, which are densely populated by low-income residents, without damaging the buildings.

In fact, although the United States is the birthplace of the internet, its fiber optic cable deployment rate ranks only 22nd in the world, so KT stated, "We expect that innovative technologies such as KT's Giga Wire will continue to receive significant attention in the U.S. telecommunications market."

The Giga Wire pilot project launched this time will initially target about 130 households in downtown Boston, and based on this case, KT plans to expand its business, including various network technologies and smart solutions, to other cities in the U.S., including San Francisco.

Robin Jeffreys (49), who lives in Haynes House in Boston where Giga Wire has been installed, said, “I only replaced a modem in my house without any separate construction, but I can feel the internet speed is tens of times faster than before,” adding, “I actually didn’t know that Korea’s IT technology was this advanced.”
