KT Recognized for 5G Research Contributions in Asia

KT announced that it has been selected as the outstanding operator in three categories at the '5G Asia Awards 2017' held on the 3rd at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore among leading telecommunications and manufacturing operators: 'Outstanding Contribution to 5G R&D', 'Leadership in IoT', and 'Best Network Development'.
The 5G Asia Awards, marking its 10th year this year, is organized by 'Informa Telecom&Media', a global information and communications technology research institute with approximately 150 branch offices across 43 countries worldwide, and selects companies that have achieved the most outstanding results and innovation in the Asian mobile communications industry.
Following its selection as the Best Network Operator at the '5G World Awards 2017' held in London, UK in June, KT's award at this '5G Asia Awards 2017' officially demonstrated that KT's network technology capabilities, including 5G and LTE, are at the world's highest level.
In particular, KT's receipt of the outstanding operator award in the top 5G research contribution category recognized its past activities in 5G international standardization and the research and development process and results for 5G trial service to be showcased in PyeongChang in '18.
KT is actively participating in international standardization bodies such as 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Network) for developing 5G standard specifications. In November of '15, KT formed the '5G SIG (Special Interest Group)', a 5G specification consultative body, with global manufacturers including Samsung, Qualcomm, and Intel, and completed the PyeongChang 5G specification in June of '16. KT has disclosed this publicly on its homepage to revitalize the 5G ecosystem and research and development.
Park Pyong-soo, Executive Director of KT's Network Division who took the stage as award recipient on the day, stated, "KT will make efforts to become a company capable of delivering customer satisfaction through global No.1 technology capabilities and continuous innovation and technological development," and added, "KT will continue to lead the 5G era going forward."

KT Holds Contest to See What Innovative 5G Service Will Come Out… Who Will Win?
KT held a "5G Service Contest" planned to create the 5G era together with small and medium-sized and venture companies, where Burnect, an AR/VR specialist company, won the grand prize. KT announced on the 21st that it held an awards ceremony for the 5G Service Contest at KT Gwanghwamun Building East in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Key executives from KT's new business divisions, including President Koo Hyun-mo of Management Support, and Executive Vice President Song Jae-ho of Integrated Security Business Division, attended the ceremony to congratulate the award-winning companies. The contest, prepared by KT together with small and medium-sized and venture companies to develop services suitable for 5G networks, received ideas over a one-month period from August 1st to September 1st. In March of this year, KT launched "KT-Eco Alliance," an open-type technical consultation body for collaboration with small and medium-sized and venture companies in 11 new business fields including 5G and fintech. This contest was conducted primarily with participating companies from the KT-Eco Alliance.

Samsung Electronics Successfully Demonstrates 4G-5G Mobile Communication Interworking in Moving Vehicles
Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom have successfully demonstrated interworking between 4G and 5G mobile communications. The successful communication seamlessly switching between 4G LTE using the 2.6GHz frequency band and 5G networks in the 28GHz and 3.5GHz frequency bands is a world first. Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom recently established 4G and 5G base stations supporting different frequency bands and next-generation virtualized core networks at Euljiro in Seoul, and installed integrated terminals supporting both 4G and 5G in a vehicle to successfully demonstrate continuous communication service between the base station and terminal even during driving.

Xilinx Integrates RF Signal Chain into SoC for 5G Wireless Communications
Xilinx announced the launch of the Zynq® UltraScale+™ RFSoC product family, an innovative architecture that integrates RF signal chains into SoCs for 5G wireless, cable remote-PHY, and radar applications. The fully programmable RFSoC based on a 16-nanometer UltraScale+ MPSoC architecture integrates RF data converters capable of reducing system power and size by up to 50-75%, and also integrates SD-FEC (soft-decision Forward Error Correction) that meets 5G and DOCSIS 3.1 standards as a single unit. Silicon samples are currently being provided to various customers, and an Early access program for the Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC product family is also available. The Zynq RFSoC combines RF data converters and SD-FEC cores with high-performance 16-nanometer UltraScale+ programmable logic and ARM multiprocessing systems, enabling the construction of an integrated signal chain from analog to digital.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
