Wolfson's power management and audio hub solutions adopted in Z Labs' Android tablet reference design
February 23, 2012 – Wolfson Microelectronics announced that its innovative power management solution, 'WM8326', and advanced audio hub solution, 'WM8993', have been adopted by ZiiLABS, a company specializing in media processors and platforms.
According to this, Wolfson solutions have been adopted in the 'JAGUAR3 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich' tablet reference design based on the ZiiLABS 100-Core ZMS-40 processor recently announced by ZiiLABS to provide power management and audio processing performance.
One of Wolfson’s successful power management solutions, the WM8326, is designed for low-power portable multimedia applications and can be used in any application that utilizes a multimedia processor, such as tablet PCs, smartphones, e-books, and media players.
Equipped with four synchronous programmable DC-DC buck converters, the WM8326 provides excellent performance and high efficiency under any operating conditions. In particular, the integrated One-Time Programmable (OTP) memory shortens time-to-market.
In addition, the WM8993, which incorporates an innovative ultra-low power hub architecture, can manage all audio processing and multimedia applications. Above all, by managing, converting, and processing a full array of various audio streams, including voice, speaker, microphone, music, and headphone signals, the WM8993 can provide flexible audio mixing capabilities and high performance to modern portable devices.
Based on four 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 CPUs, the ZMS-40 features 96 Z Labs 'StemCell' media processing cores, providing remarkable multitasking application and media processing performance. Compared to the previous version, ZMS20, ZMS-40, equipped with twice the number of stem cell media processors, provides twice the peak media performance, so it delivers the same performance even when operating on larger arrays at lower clock speeds, and is highly energy efficient, reducing power consumption by up to 50%.
"We are pleased that ZiiLABS has once again adopted Wolfson's technology for its latest ZMS-40 media processor reference design," said Jess Brown, Manager of the Power Management Product Line at Wolfson. "It is very encouraging that our technology is being provided for all Jaguar tablet Android reference platforms."
Wolfson has a high reputation in the consumer electronics market as a leading provider of audio and power management solutions, and the WM8326 and WM8993 enable system designers to integrate various features of their products while improving product efficiency and performance.
Tim Lewis, Director at Z Labs, explained, “Wolfson has established itself as the ideal partner for our Jaguar tablet reference design by combining a global supply chain with design-win support to consistently deliver innovative power management and audio solutions.”
Wolfson plans to showcase the Z Labs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet and design kit at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, which will be held between February 27 and March 1.
