2017 Semiconductor Expo (SEDEX) held at COEX from 17th to 19th

An exhibition that showcases the latest semiconductor technology trends at a glance is being held. The Korea Semiconductor Industry Association announced that it will hold the '19th Semiconductor Expo (SEDEX, SEmiconDuctor EXhibition)' at COEX in Seoul from the 17th.

The Semiconductor Expo (SEDEX) is an event hosted by the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, and is held under the general name of 'Korea Electronics Industry Expo' along with the Korea Electronics Show and the Korea Display Industry Show during the same period.

The Semiconductor Expo will be attended by 180 companies from all sectors of the semiconductor industry ecosystem, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, semiconductor equipment, materials, parts, design, materials, and equipment companies, with 517 booths. This is the largest scale ever. Before the opening of the Semiconductor Expo, the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association presented five key points to watch for this year’s Semiconductor Expo to help exhibitors and visitors understand the event.

Viewing Point 1. Memory War (Featuring Semiconductor Equipment Companies) = ▲ Samsung Electronics will showcase a number of cutting-edge semiconductor solutions for various fields including servers, mobile, and automotive. It will exhibit semiconductor solutions that concentrate cutting-edge technologies such as 10nm-class DRAM, ultra-high-performance HBM2 DRAM, UFS embedded memory, enterprise and consumer SSDs, Exynos lineup used in various fields including mobile and VR, and image sensor 'ISOCELL'. ▲ SK Hynix will showcase the latest server DRAM, SSD, and the latest mobile DRAM, 8GB LPDDR4X, in a large booth themed after a data sensor server room under the theme of 'Memory within the 4th Industrial Revolution'. ▲ Leading domestic semiconductor equipment companies such as Semes, Exicon, Wonik IPS, and PSK, which are making great strides thanks to the favorable winds of the global semiconductor market, are showcasing various semiconductor production equipment and demonstrating equipment technology that enables ultra-fine processes.

□ Viewing Point 2. System Semiconductor Exhibition = This year, ▲ GlobalFoundries, the world’s second largest foundry company, is participating in the Semiconductor Fair for the first time. GlobalFoundries will showcase its 22nm FD-SOI (Fully Depleted Silicon On Insulator) process technology, 22FDX, and BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) / BCDlite process technology. ▲ STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor company with a wide portfolio in sensors, microcontrollers (MCU), and connectivity, will introduce various demos of smart homes using the latest IoT semiconductor technology. In addition, ▲ Fujitsu, the 8th largest company in the global foundry market share, ▲ AD Technology, the only company in Korea that provides TSMC design services, etc. will be participating with mid- to large-sized booths. ▲ Six domestic and foreign semiconductor IP companies—Wingco, Leo LSI, Seegene, Avant (Taiwan), Andes (Taiwan), and Hoi (Taiwan)—will be participating in a joint booth called the IP Pavilion. ▲ Meanwhile, design demos of the six winning teams, including the grand prize winner, from this year's 'Semiconductor Design Competition' will also be exhibited.

Observation point 3. Opening Keynote Seminar Conference Heat = ▲ On the morning of the 17th, the first day of the opening, with the theme of 'How the 4th Industrial Revolution works', Jo Seong-ho, Head of SK Telecom Network Lab, Martin Wöhrle, Head of BMW Group Korea R&D Center, and Len Jelinek, Vice President of IHS Markit will give keynote speeches on 5G, connected cars, and the global semiconductor market outlook, respectively. ▲ From the afternoon of the 17th to the 18th, the 'IP-SoC Design Conference' specializing in system semiconductors will be held. Foundry and semiconductor IP companies will hold a conference targeting mainly fabless companies. It will be a rare opportunity for the system semiconductor ecosystem to gather in one place, and the trends in semiconductor design and process technology will be introduced with themes of autonomous vehicles, AI, deep learning, and IoT. ▲ The 'Semiconductor Market Outlook Seminar' will follow on the 18th. Global memory top two Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will introduce their strategies and technologies regarding 'Current Status and Future Outlook of DRAM Semiconductors' and 'Deep Learning Trends in the Semiconductor Industry', respectively.

Observation Point 4. Semiconductor Venture/Startup-VC Battle = ▲ Startup Showcase, a joint special exhibition hall for promoting technology, attracting investment, marketing, and supporting growth of semiconductor venture/startup companies, will be operated at the exhibition hall. Ten semiconductor startups, including Padu, Finesolution, Teams, Senvis, and C-mostek, will participate. ▲ On the 18th, the day after the exhibition, a semiconductor IR conference will be held with 15 semiconductor mid-sized/venture/startup companies, including DeepEye, BeyondEyes, Ubimaterials, and Icell Electronics. Venture capitals (VCs), new technology finance companies, and private equity fund managers (PEFs) will attend and have investment consultations and networking sessions with IR participating companies.

Observation Point 5. B2B-B2C side event heat = ▲ Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Dongbu HiTek will dispatch their purchasing teams to the semiconductor exhibition site, visit the booths of equipment, materials, and parts companies, and hold purchasing consultations. ▲ Chinese buyers such as YMTC (Changjiang Memory), a subsidiary of China's Tsinghua Unigroup, HLMC (Huali Micro), and CR Micro will hold 1:1 trade consultations targeting domestic semiconductor companies. Meanwhile ▲ Semiconductor industry job special lectures and consulting will also be held to reflect the increased interest of college students in the semiconductor industry. Information on jobs and employment capabilities of not only IDMs (integrated semiconductor companies) such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, but also semiconductor design and equipment companies will be available. ▲ On the 17th and 18th, the two associations of Semiconductor and Display will jointly hold a Semiconductor-Display Job Fair.

Nam Ki-man, executive vice chairman of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, said, “This year’s Semiconductor Expo is a place to look at the entire semiconductor industry in our country,” and added, “I hope that this will be a fruitful business venue where participating companies can promote new technologies and open up new sales channels.” Vice Chairman Nam emphasized, “This year’s Semiconductor Expo will be a great opportunity for companies looking for new investment and developers, as semiconductor ventures, startups, and the winning teams from the 2017 Semiconductor Design Competition will participate and showcase their novel ideas and technological competitiveness.”
