56 relay cameras mobilized to implement the service

LG U+ announced that it broadcasted the first game of the 2017 professional baseball postseason playoffs between the Doosan Bears and NC Dinos, held at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Tuesday the 17th, live via smartphones using 5G-level service.

On this day, LG U+ not only provided a demonstration inside Jamsil Stadium but also set up a separate demonstration booth outside the stadium for customers who were unable to obtain tickets, and based on the so-called '4.5G network' capable of high-speed data transmission of up to 900Mbps*, it broadcasted high-definition game videos in real time to smartphones that were six times clearer than existing professional baseball app services.

In this broadcast, various 4.5G-based services were utilized, including ▲'Position-by-Position Video' that allows you to see the movements of all players in the stadium at a glance, ▲'360-degree VR' that is as vivid as watching in person, and ▲'Strike Close-Up Video' that allows you to view the decisive moment from various angles.

The 4.5G technology unveiled this time is a 5G-level mobile broadcasting service that allows customers to enjoy a variety of video screens they have never experienced before on their smartphones, based on LG U+'s LTE network with gigabit transmission speeds.

In particular, in the case of position-specific videos, which LG U+ has implemented for the first time in Korea on mobile, viewers can simultaneously watch the movements of players at bat, first base, second base, third base, and outfield on a single smartphone screen while watching a live game broadcast, allowing them to immerse themselves in the broadcast as if they were the manager.

In addition, the 4K (UHD) high-definition '360-degree VR' that allows viewers to rotate the cheering section and dugout screens in all directions provides viewers with the experience of cheering with the cheerleaders and cheering squad leader, as well as watching the game right next to the players.

Hitting videos, which show crucial moments such as a batter's hit or a runner scoring from various angles, help you watch your favorite players' plays in greater detail.

A total of 56 cameras were used for this match broadcast to show the desired match scene from multiple angles and to provide images from different angles simultaneously on one screen.

LG U+ has developed a separate media platform that can synchronize and reassemble multiple videos shot simultaneously from various angles by multiple cameras, and has also applied the High Efficiency Video Compression (HEVC) codec, which is twice as efficient as existing codecs, to enable simultaneous streaming of Full-HD and Ultra-HD quality.

LG U+'s introduction of this new technology in conjunction with a baseball game broadcast aims to provide customers with an opportunity to experience next-generation mobile communication services ahead of the 5G era, thereby facilitating a better understanding of network technology and services and fostering a greater understanding of their necessity.

Park Jun-dong, executive director of LG Uplus’ future service business division, said, “There aren’t many opportunities to actually show customers the 5G technology and services that have been a hot topic recently, so we prepared this demonstration,” and added, “We will steadily accumulate future technologies to lead the 5G era.”

Meanwhile, LG U+ will be focusing on densely populated areas of major cities across the country, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Busan, and Daegu, starting from the end of August. We provide 4.5G service at 900Mbps, and we plan to continuously expand the service coverage as traffic increases.
