The country's eighth drone-only flight zone will be created.
Published2017.10.20 10:45The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is establishing the nation's eighth drone-only flight zone in the Ulsan area.
The newly established drone-only flight zone is located in Hajam-ri, Samdong-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City, at an altitude of 150 meters above the ground and covers an area of approximately 52,000 square meters, equivalent to the size of five soccer fields.
Within the drone-only flight zone, drones can be flown freely regardless of their weight. In Korea, there are seven drone-only flight zones, including Cheongna, Mihocheon, and Gimhae, and this is the first in the Ulsan area.
The Ulsan area has a high concentration of drone no-fly zones, including nuclear power plants, industrial facilities, and airports, so there have been many difficulties in establishing flight zones. However, the final decision was made by the Airspace Working Committee after a proposal from Ulsan Metropolitan City and active review by related organizations, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of National Defense.
The name of the newly designated drone-only flight zone is “UA* 38 ULJU (Ulju)” and it is scheduled to take effect on December 7th after a public notice period.
The establishment of this new drone-only flight zone is expected to benefit drone enthusiasts and related businesses in the Ulsan area, who have previously experienced the inconvenience of traveling to other regions for drone flights, and is also expected to contribute to the revitalization of the region's aviation leisure activities and drone industry.
In addition, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that it will continue to work to expand drone-only flight zones where drones can be flown freely and support the revitalization of aviation leisure activities and the drone industry.

[Discussion] I was wondering what business models there are for making money with drones.
Drones, recognized as a core task of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. When drones are discussed domestically, market activation is an inevitable topic. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has decided to place greater emphasis on industrial drones rather than hobbyist drones. So what kind of business should small and medium enterprises and startups pursue using drones? Under the theme of "Drones Emerging as a New Business," a discussion session was held at the Seoul Industrial Promotion Agency in Sangam to explore what kind of business can actually be conducted using drones and what issues need to be addressed to revitalize the industry. First, experts discussed recommended sectors that small and medium enterprises should consider challenging. Lee Hyun-jong, CEO of RoboLink, stated, "Ten years ago, we focused on developing our own products. Now we operate in integration with domestic and international drone partner companies," and advised, "The focus is burning on hardware development, but it is difficult to compete with China in the hardware sector. Rather than asking what kind of drone to build, shift your attention toward the software side."

Technology to identify low-altitude drones is emerging.
한국전자통신연구원(ETRI)은 지상 150m(미터) 내외 저고도 상공 교통관제 시스템 수립을 위해 상공의 드론을 식별, 불법 드론 운행을 방지하는 기술 개발을 추진한다. 연구진은 저고도 무인비행장치 교통관리체계를 위해 드론의 식별, 인증, 주고받는 정보의 암호화, 해킹 등에 대응, 사진 촬영 등 프라이버시 보호 등과 관련된 보안기술 및 불법행위 억제기술 개발을 시작했다고 밝혔다. 이에 과학기술정보통신부를 비롯, 국토교통부 등은 급격하게 증가되는 무인비행장치를 위한 교통관리체계를 정립 및 개발하기 위해 「저고도 무인비행장치 교통관리 감시기술 개발 및 실증시험사업」을 다부처 사업으로 추진중이다.
