Samsung Electronics Hosts the 4th 'Samsung Open Source Conference'
Published2017.10.25 11:17Samsung Electronics will hold the 'Samsung Open Source Conference (SOSCON)' for two days on the 25th and 26th at the Samsung Electronics Seoul R&D Campus in Umyeon-dong.
The 'Samsung Open Source Conference,' held annually since 2014, is the largest open source conference in Korea with over 1,000 developers participating each year, and this year, over 2,000 developers have registered to participate.
At the event, global leaders in the open source field, including △Seung-Hwan Cho, Vice President of Samsung Electronics Software Center △Professor Joon-Ho Oh, a professor of mechanical engineering and robotics at KAIST △Bum-Joon Kim, CTO of Woowa Brothers, which operates the food delivery application 'Baedal Minjok' △and Kamal Brar, Vice President of Hortonworks, a leading company in the open source-based big data sector, emphasized the importance, development culture, and value of open source, as well as sharing and collaboration through open source, through keynote speeches.
In addition, during the 'Inspiration Talk,' where we listen to the challenges and success stories of mentors, Lee Sang-ho of 'Mand.ro,' who created the world's first electronic prosthetic hand using a 3D printer, shared his insights. CEO and entrepreneurship educator Hong Soon-jae gave a presentation on the topics of open source and entrepreneurship.
At this event, about 30 technical sessions were held on the topic of open source used in artificial intelligence, big data, IoT, cloud, platform, and security technologies.

Public Institutions 'Moving Away from Windows to Open Source OS'
The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) collaborated with the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) to introduce an open-source operating system (OS). As a result, they were able to reduce license purchase costs and improve PC stability. This was necessary because the military was still using an OS with discontinued technical support, which presented security vulnerabilities when handling military fitness assessment results, psychological tests, and military administrative data. As the first public institution to adopt an open-source OS, the MMA analyzed open-source operating systems suitable for psychological testing. The Ministry of Science and ICT and NIPA developed evaluation criteria in consultation with assessment agencies to conduct security reviews. As a result, they selected Ubuntu, which is based on Debian Linux. The selection was based on highly favorable evaluations of stable distribution releases, user convenience, and stable operation in low-specification environments.

Intel and Red Hat Open Software Defined Infrastructure Solution Center
Intel has opened a Software-Defined Infrastructure (SDI) solution center in collaboration with Red Hat, a leading global open-source solution provider. The newly opened Red Hat and Intel Software-Defined Infrastructure Solution Center supports public and enterprise customers who are reviewing software-defined infrastructure deployment—the biggest topic in the IT industry recently—to examine related solutions in a more convenient and efficient manner. Customers can perform various tests, including preliminary technical validation, on technologies and products they are considering for deployment at the Red Hat and Intel Software-Defined Infrastructure Solution Center. Through the opening of this Red Hat and Intel Software-Defined Infrastructure Solution Center, Red Hat is now able to showcase software-defined infrastructure solutions that serve as the foundation for private cloud and hybrid cloud environments.

Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
Databricks entered the security market on March 24 by unveiling LakeWatch, an open-source agentic SIEM. The core functionality of this product is to integrate and analyze security, IT, and business data in a single environment to support AI-based threat detection and investigation. The company explained that it reduces the limitations of existing security operations centers, which have had to forgo some data due to high cost structures, and enables large-scale data analysis and automation based on open formats and ecosystems. LakeWatch is currently offered as a private preview, with Adobe and Dropbox mentioned as early customers. Databricks also announced an expanded partnership with Anthropic as well as the acquisition of Antimatter and SiftD.ai.
