Launch of Compact 9-Axis Smart Multi-Sensor Module Combined with 32-Bit Processing Unit
March 7, 2012, Seoul — STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a global semiconductor company in various electronic device applications and a leader in consumer and portable MEMS, has launched the INEMO-M1, a smart multi-sensor module that combines a 9-degrees-of-freedom sensor with a 32-bit processing unit. By combining complex motion and magnetic sensors with powerful processing capabilities and dedicated software in a compact module, this product enables exceptional realism in gaming, Human Machine Interfaces, robotics, portable navigation devices, and patient care.

The INEMO-M1 SOB (System-on-Board) perfectly detects and assimilates linear acceleration, angular velocity, Earth's gravity, and orientation, enabling users to accurately detect their direction, position, and movement in three dimensions. Detection accuracy is enhanced by the functionality of a 32-bit processing unit that incorporates dedicated fusion sensor software to integrate data from all sensors and employs advanced prediction and filtering algorithms to automatically correct measurement distortions and errors.

The INEMO-M1 is the first product introduced in ST's latest SOB family, built upon the award-winning iNEMO smart multi-sensor technology. This compact 13 x 13 x 2mm unit combines a 6-axis geomagnetic sensor, a 3-axis gyroscope, and ST's market-leading ARM-Cortex-based 32-bit microcontroller, the STM32. The iNEMO module supports a wide range of interfaces, including USB 2.0, CAN, USART, SPI, I2C, analog-to-digital conversion channels for external input, and flexible power supply options.
The INEMO-M1 module is the core of the sensor node in ST's latest Smart-Suit prototype for inertial body motion restoration, which recognizes complex movements of the wearer's body and converts this information into a digital model with high precision and speed.
Market analysis firm IHS iSupplies expects the market for 9-axis fusion sensors used in portable devices and media tablets to reach $1.3 billion in 2015.
ST's INEMO-M1 SOB is currently being sampled to select customers, and mass production is scheduled for the second quarter of 2012.
