VortiQa networking software extension to include the industry's first comprehensive user-space software for embedded Linux software development
March 8, 2012, Seoul, Korea – Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL, www.freescale.com ) is expanding the capabilities of its successful VortiQa networking software suite beyond traditional security and networking. To accelerate development and enhance performance of embedded software for Freescale’s cutting-edge QorIQ and QorIQ Qonverge products, Freescale announced the VortiQa™ Platform Service Package (PSP), the industry’s first comprehensive embedded networking software framework that supports programming in the Linux® user space.
The VortiQa PSP streamlines development by minimizing bare-metal coding and shifting more application development tasks to the user-friendly Linux user space. As a result, the set of available verified software candidates is expanded, enabling the acquisition of faster, higher-quality, and cost-effective applications.
The VortiQa PSP is the optimal solution for the development of embedded networking products, including data center equipment such as enterprise routers, security devices, application optimization devices, web application firewalls, wireless infrastructure devices, and application delivery controllers.
"We are pleased to offer our customers such a comprehensive embedded user-space software framework through the latest VortiQa software package," said Sathyan Iyengar, Senior Vice President and Software Product Manager at Freescale Networking and Multimedia Solutions Group. "By minimizing development effort through user-space programming alongside the increased precision of multicore processors like Freescale QorIQ, we can fully unlock the potential performance of Freescale products and reduce total costs for overall software development and maintenance."
The new solution provides developers with an abstraction layer for software development targeting Freescale Data Path Acceleration Architecture (DPAA), a cutting-edge technology integrated into Freescale QorIQ multicore processors. In addition to accelerating software development, the VortiQa PSP helps developers migrate software to QorIQ products and mitigate licensing issues that may exist in Loadable Kernel Modules (LKMs) used to support new hardware in the Linux OS.
Supply situation
The VortiQa PSP, which is in the mass production preparation stage, is scheduled to be supplied in March 2012, and modules and libraries will be integrated into a software development kit in the form of a package. This package includes a comprehensive execution engine, memory management, software timers, Ethernet drivers, hardware accelerator blocks, comprehensive IPv4/IPv6 forwarding, and Layer 4 session tracing capabilities. Along with the PSP, Freescale provides related services and support, including access to the user community to utilize the product.
