Western Digital hosted the event "Data Innovation: Generating Climate Solutions" with UN Global Pulse at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP23).

Co-hosted by UN Global Pulse, the event is part of the Sustainable Innovation Forum, a key event at COP23 in Bonn, Germany.

The event began with a speech by Robert C. Orr, Assistant to the UN Secretary-General for Climate Change, who presented examples of data-driven innovations for responding to climate change and discussed ways to develop big data for climate action.

This year's Data Innovation event also announced the winners of Data for Climate Action (D4CA), a data innovation competition that aims to harness the power of private sector data science and big data for public good. Launched earlier this year with support from the Skoll Global Threats Fund, a foundation that supports social enterprises, the competition brought together innovators, scientists, and climate experts from around the world to tackle climate issues, with Western Digital providing prize money to the winner.

In the afternoon session, speakers from various companies, including global telecommunications company Orange, weather sensor network Earth Networks, Earth image satellite network operator Planet, data analysis and visualization service Tableau, social networking service Twitter, and World Resource Institute, gave presentations on data visualization and big data analysis, followed by a panel discussion.
