Samsung Electronics Launches Mixed Reality (MR) Headset with AMOLED Display
Published2017.11.15 11:03Samsung Electronics will launch the premium mixed reality headset 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' in Korea on the 21st.
The 'Samsung HMD Odyssey,' a collaboration between Microsoft and Samsung Electronics, connects the virtual and real worlds in conjunction with a PC to provide users with a new experience, and was first unveiled in the U.S. in early October.
The 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' features a 3.5-inch dual AMOLED display, offering a maximum resolution of 2880x1600 and a 110-degree field of view. Additionally, it is equipped with a high-quality headset from Harman's premium audio brand, AKG, providing 360-degree spatial sound, and features a built-in microphone that enables real-time voice chat even while using the device.
Another major advantage of the 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' is that it does not require the installation of separate external sensors. The 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' has a camera sensor built into the headset, so it can be used immediately simply by connecting it to a PC, and it also allows for easy and convenient game control by linking it with a 'Six Degrees of Freedom (6DOF)' motion controller.
The 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' can be enjoyed on a PC supporting the newly updated Windows 10 OS, and the recommended specifications are an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or higher graphics card, the latest graphics driver, an Intel Core i5 or higher CPU, and 8GB of RAM or more.
The 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' will be available for hands-on experience and purchase starting November 21 at 40 major stores nationwide, including the Samsung Digital Plaza Gangnam Main Branch and E-Mart Electromart Hanam Branch, and will also be sold on the Samsung Electronics website. The price is 790,000 won.

과학기술정보통신부는 4차 산업혁명의 신성장동력인 가상현실(VR)산업을 선도할 콘텐츠 개발자와 기업 발굴을 위해 추진한 그랜드 챌린지에서 우수한 성과를 거둔 개인?팀을 시상하는 ‘VR어워드’를 9월 20일 서울 상암 누리꿈스퀘어에서 개최했다. 지난해에 이어 2회를 맞이한 그랜드챌린지는 학생부와 일반부로 구성되어있으며, 각각 EDPI-VR팀의 ‘Body Adventure’와 서커스컴퍼니팀의 ‘매직 알(AR)박스’가 과기정통부 장관상을 수상했다. 과기정통부는 출품 콘텐츠의 완성도를 높이기 위해 3개월간의 사전개발 기간을 두었다. 롯데월드, 쓰리디팩토리, 스코넥 등 여러 기업이 멘토(mentor)로 참여해 HMD(Head Mounted Display) 등의 장치, 서버와 같은 인프라와 기술코칭을 지원했다. 또한, 참가자들의 원활한 개발을 위해 누리꿈스퀘어 내에 개발 공간을 제공했다.
