LG Uplus Launches Google VR-Exclusive OTT Service App
Published2017.11.16 17:02LG Uplus announced that it has launched the 'U+ Video Portal VR' app, a mobile internet video (OTT) service, through Google Daydream, Google's dedicated VR platform.
The 'U + Video Portal VR' app is a service that provides free VOD, 360-degree videos, and real-time channels available on the mobile TV U + Video Portal in a virtual space.
You can use the service by installing the Google Daydream app from the Google Play Store and wearing the Daydream View. The Daydream View is Google's latest virtual reality (VR) device that allows you to enjoy videos on a large screen by wearing it like glasses while on the go.
Google Daydream is a VR-exclusive content and service store that provides 114 VR apps, including U+ Video Portal, and is available on △LG Electronics V30 △Samsung Electronics Galaxy S8 & S8+/Note 8 △Google Pixel Phone/Pixel XL/Pixel 2 XL △2 Huawei models △3 Motorola models, etc.
To increase customer satisfaction, a feature is also provided that allows changing the screen size to three modes (large/normal/small). 'VR Cinema,' which allows viewing on a large screen, utilizes the latest HEVC codec to provide a clearer picture quality than that of conventional VR, and is expected to deeply impress customers.
The HEVC codec is a method with twice the compression efficiency compared to AVC (Advanced Video Coding), the most widely used video codec technology currently, so even for video of the same quality, the compression efficiency is twice as high, which can reduce data usage.
In particular, a key advantage is that customers can easily find the VOD they want using the controller (remote control) while wearing the lightweight and breathable Daydream View.

ETRI develops technology to create 360-degree VR content using smartphones
Domestic researchers have developed a technology that enables the creation of high-definition 360-degree VR (virtual reality) content using smartphones. ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) has partnered with NextIon, a virtual reality solution provider, to develop and successfully commercialize YouVR technology, which enables the production of 360-degree VR content in a mobile environment without dedicated hardware. Users can download and utilize a dedicated app. Previously, producing 360-degree VR content required dedicated hardware such as a multi-camera rig—a device that precisely combines multiple cameras. Additionally, stitching software was necessary to connect photographs simultaneously captured by multiple cameras, as well as software to stitch and join multiple video frames together.
