Three major telecom carriers showcase diverse services at 'Global 5G Event'
Published2017.11.22 12:02Global 5G leaders gather together to share the process of completing 5G networks and technological competitiveness. The '4th Global 5G Event' will be held for three days starting on the 22nd at JW Marriott Hotel Seoul.
The Global 5G Event is an international cooperation conference jointly hosted by 5G organizations belonging to South Korea, China, Japan, the European Union (EU), and the United States, aimed at cooperation among leading 5G countries. Five countries take turns hosting the Global 5G Event every six months, and this 4th Global 5G Event is being held under the leadership of Korea's '5G Forum.'
The 4th Global 5G Event, under the theme '5G, Accelerating the 4th Industrial Revolution,' will feature presentations and discussions in main sessions covering 5G technology development status by telecommunications operators of each country, the role of 5G in the fourth industrial revolution, and 5G requirements from other industrial sectors.
KT showcases 5G trial service expertise in keynote speech
In a special session, KT, as the operator that showcased the world's first 5G trial service in 2018, will share the 5G network completion process and construction know-how to date, as well as KT's efforts and future plans to secure global 5G leadership.
KT Network Division President Oh Sung-mok presented KT's challenge to lead global 5G under the title 'Challenge for World First PyeongChang 5G Olympic.'
President Oh Sung-mok emphasized that "in the coming fourth industrial revolution era, 5G will be the core infrastructure of a hyper-connected society," and said, "South Korea showcased the world's first 5G trial service to the world at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, creating a new opportunity to expand the 5G ecosystem to various industries."
"The 5G Forum will strengthen cooperation among domestic and international 5G organizations for 5G to play a core role in the fourth industrial revolution, and will also continue to promote organic cooperation among the private, public, academic, and research sectors," he disclosed the future direction of 5G Forum promotion.
SKT showcases diverse converged services that will emerge after 5G commercialization
SK Telecom will share core technologies and converged services for early 5G commercialization at the 'Global 5G Event,' including ▲the world's first 5G-LTE network interworking and handover ▲network virtualization ▲5G-based autonomous driving ▲next-generation media services including 5G tablet-based AR and VR.
On the afternoon of the 23rd, they will invite Global 5G Forum chairpersons and government officials to Seoul's Eulji-ro T Tower to showcase ▲the state-of-the-art 5G experience center 'T.um' ▲autonomous vehicles ▲5G experience buses and other diverse converged services that will unfold after 5G commercialization.
ICT officials from around the world visiting T Tower will directly experience at 'T.um' ▲5G V2X (Vehicle to Everything) and HD map-based autonomous vehicles ▲VR shopping through immersive media ▲artificial intelligence devices that can control smart home appliances by voice.
Park Jin-hyo, Head of Network Technology at SK Telecom, said, "We expect that SK Telecom's core 5G technologies and converged services unveiled this time will promote 5G commercialization in major countries worldwide," and added, "We will continue to dedicate ourselves to developing innovative technologies and services to maintain our country's global 5G leadership."
LG U+ conducts 'oscillating pendulum experiment' demonstrating 5G's fast response speed
LG U+ plans to invite overseas telecom operators, manufacturers, and major government officials attending the 5G event to its Yongsan headquarters and Gangnam cluster to demonstrate and allow experience of 5G technology and services.
In this exhibition, a '5G oscillating pendulum experiment' that visually shows 5G's fast response speed compared to LTE is expected to capture viewers' attention.
When a command to invert an oscillating pendulum is given, the server calculates the oscillation amplitude of the pendulum and transmits data values for stabilization to the pendulum. Due to the transmission speed difference between 5G and LTE, the oscillation amplitude and time required for the pendulum can be seen to be significantly shorter with 5G compared to LTE.
Additionally, 5G video services such as ultra-high-definition VR video providing realistic experience and enhanced immersion, mixed reality (MR) games, FWA (UHD wireless IPTV), and B2B services with high application value in industrial sites such as RC car driving and 5G smart drones will also be demonstrated. FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) is a solution that replaces part of the wired communication network section with wireless to provide ultra-high-speed internet, capable of providing UHD-grade IPTV services wirelessly.
Park Jun-dong, Executive Director of LG U+ Future Services Business Division, said, "The Global 5G Event will be an opportunity to inform major figures around the world of the excellence of 5G technology and services," and stated, "We plan to accelerate technology and service development so that all citizens can enjoy the highest quality 5G services."

KT Chairman Hwang Chang-kyu inspects 5G preparations for PyeongChang Winter Olympics
KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu visited PyeongChang, Gangwon Province on the 16th to inspect the network preparations for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Accompanying Chairman Hwang on this site visit were key KT executives related to the Olympics, including Network Division Head President Oh Sung-mok and PyeongChang Winter Olympics Promotion Team Head Executive Vice President Kim Hyung-jun. As the official communications partner of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, KT is responsible for the Games communications network and broadcast relay network. Additionally, KT has set a goal to showcase the world's first 5G trial service in PyeongChang in February 2018. To this end, KT completed construction of the Games communications network and broadcast relay network in June, and then finished building a 5G trial network centered on venues in PyeongChang and Gangneung, Gangwon Province by the end of October. Chairman Hwang visited the 'PyeongChang 5G Center' located at the PyeongChang Ski Jumping facility to confirm the Games communications network along with 5G trial service preparation status. During this visit, Chairman Hwang received a briefing on 5G technology and directly measured the 5G speed, which was implemented at up to 3.2Gbps.

SKT Uses ICT Technology at Disaster Sites
SK Telecom and Gangwon Fire Department announced that they have agreed to effectively support firefighting activities through ICT. This is to overcome geographical constraints using ICT in consideration of Gangwon Province's terrain, which is surrounded by forests covering 82% of its area. First, SK Telecom will provide Gangwon Fire Department with a "Public Safety Solution" that combines 230 units of wearable special terminals (hereinafter body cameras), 4 command drones, and a real-time video control system called "T Live Caster." Gangwon Fire Department plans to deploy the equipment to the Special Rescue Team and 16 fire stations under its jurisdiction, and will systematically respond to various disasters and accidents from the control center based on video footage sent from firefighters at the scene. In addition, SK Telecom and Gangwon Fire Department plan to enhance the solution through ultra-high-speed and ultra-low-latency 5G communication to identify disaster situations more quickly and respond appropriately to various disasters and accidents.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
