HDMI Forum, Inc. has officially announced HDMI 2.1, the latest high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) specification. Through the HDMI Forum website, detailed information on the latest HDMI 2.1 specification in Korean is made available to everyone.

HDMI 2.1 was developed by the technical working group of HDMI Forum, whose members include major global consumer electronics, personal computer (PC), mobile device, cable, and component manufacturers. Robert Blanchard, Chairman of HDMI Forum at Sony Electronics, stated, "The mission of HDMI Forum is to develop technology that meets market demands, address the increasing need for high performance, and create future product development opportunities."

The latest HDMI 2.1 specification supports high resolutions and fast refresh rates including 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz, with resolution support up to 10K maximum. The bandwidth of HDMI 2.1 is up to 48Gbps, a significant improvement compared to the previous HDMI 2.0 specification which supported up to 18Gbps. It also supports dynamic HDR, enabling more detailed image expression of video content through contrast with deeper blacks and brighter whites. HDMI 2.1 is backward compatible with previous versions.

HDMI Forum has also introduced the 'Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable,' previously called 48G cable. The Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supports high bandwidth up to 48Gbps and features very low EMI (electromagnetic interference) that reduces interference from surrounding wireless devices. It is also backward compatible with previous versions, allowing use with existing installed HDMI devices.

HDMI 2.1 supports immersive video viewing with various high resolutions and faster refresh rates (including 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz) and smooth high-speed motion detail. It also supports up to 10K resolution in commercial AV and industrial and specialized applications.

Dynamic HDR presents every moment of video content with ideal saturation, detail, brightness, contrast, and wider color reproduction on a scene or frame-by-frame basis. It supports 48G bandwidth for uncompressed cable functionality implementation. This cable features very low EMI emission and is backward compatible with previous HDMI versions, allowing use with existing HDMI devices.

Improved refresh rate functionality enables one level higher smooth and seamless motion and transitions in games, movies, and video content. Refresh rate functionality includes VRR, QMS, and QFT. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) reduces or eliminates frame delays, stuttering, and tearing for more fluid and detailed gameplay.

HDMI 2.1 Compliance Test Specification (CTS) will be announced in phases starting from Q1 2018, and will be made public upon the release of HDMI adapters.
