It can be charged with a 2-cell series lithium-ion battery pack.

Maxim Integrated Korea has launched the MAX14748, a highly efficient, high-density 15W USB Type C charger/charging method detection solution.

System designers can use a 2-cell series lithium-ion battery pack to quickly and safely charge portable USB Type C devices simply and cost-effectively.

USB Type C connectors are utilized for charging and multimedia data stream transmission for various products, such as wireless speakers, high-end cameras, virtual reality (VR) headsets, and medical devices equipped with engines.

A 2-cell series battery pack supplies the power required for such products. Until now, USB Type C products using 2-cell series battery packs required multiple individual components, resulting in high costs and circuit failures.

The MAX14748 boasts a simple structure by integrating USB Type C charge detection, 28V overvoltage protection, and power path functions into a single chip. Supporting legacy USB BC1.2 compatibility and other non-standard chargers, the MAX14748 supports USB Type C charging with twice the performance of Micro USB solutions.

The MAX14748 protects equipment by safely taking the maximum current provided by the charging adapter with a programmable Automatic Input Current Limit (AICL) function. It provides additional protection functions such as 28V integrated overvoltage protection, Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) charging protection, and USB adapter pin ±15kV electrostatic discharge protection.

Maxim is steadily expanding its power-related portfolio for USB Type C applications with the MAX14748. The portfolio includes the MAX77756 buck converter, which offers flexible options with 24V, 500mA, and low standby current; the MAX17205, an independent model gauge m5 battery level meter with SHA-256 certification; and the MAX20323 CC pin overvoltage protector.
