Cyclone V Product Family Shipments Begin – Lowest Power, Lowest Cost 28nm FPGA
Hong Kong, March 28, 2012 — Altera (NASDAQ: ALTR) announced that it has begun shipping its 28nm Cyclone® V FPGA product family. The Cyclone V devices represent the lowest power and lowest cost 28nm FPGA products currently available in the market. This product family uniquely combines high functionality with low system cost and low power consumption, making it well-suited for a wide range of applications in industrial, wireless, wireline, military, and automotive markets. With the availability of the Cyclone V product family, Altera completes its customized 28nm product portfolio, which now includes a comprehensive range of devices from those featuring very high bandwidth to devices featuring very low power consumption, enabling Altera to address each customer's specific design requirements.
The Cyclone V product family leverages TSMC's 28nm Low Power (28LP) process to deliver the low power, low cost, and optimal performance required by today's price-sensitive high-volume applications. Compared to the previous generation product family, total power consumption is up to 40 percent lower and standby power is up to 30 percent lower. Cyclone V FPGAs also feature the lowest power serial transceivers with 88mW power consumption per channel at 5Gbps and less than 1.8W at 4,000MIPS processing performance. The product family integrates rich hard IP (intellectual property) blocks, such as hard memory controllers supporting 400MHz DDR3 and multi-functional PCI Express Gen2 hard IP blocks, enabling engineers to reduce system cost and power, shorten design time, and achieve product differentiation ("Design, Manufacturing, and Debug Cost Reduction with Cyclone V FPGA" webcast provides more detailed information on this). The product family also includes comprehensive design protection features such as 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) using volatile and non-volatile keys to protect valuable IP investments.
Patrick Dorsey, Director of Product Marketing at Altera, stated, "With this product shipment, we have completed Altera's customized 28nm product portfolio, enabling customers to select and deploy the industry's most comprehensive range of devices that meet their specific performance, power, and cost requirements. As demands for higher integration, higher performance, lower power, and faster development cycles become increasingly challenging to meet, the Cyclone V product family provides an ideal device solution for price-sensitive high-volume markets."
Cyclone V FPGA
Altera's Cyclone V FPGA product family can be used in applications such as protocol bridging, motor control, broadcast, and portable devices where reducing power while conserving board space is a critical requirement. The product family is offered in six series, allowing design engineers to select the device that best fits their requirements.
The E series provides logic resources only, the GX series provides 3.125Gbps transceivers, the GT series provides 5Gbps transceivers, and the SE, SX, and ST SoC series provide devices with dual-core ARM®-based Hard Processor System (HPS).
