Demonstration of enhanced HDMI alternate mode for USB Type-C

The HDMI Forum announced that it will showcase new HDMI 2.1-supported products and premium-label certified cables from various manufacturers at 'CES 2018' in Las Vegas, USA.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a method of transmitting digital video and audio signals through a single cable, enabling the enjoyment of higher quality sound and video compared to existing analog cables. HDMI version 2.1, announced on November 28, 2017, supports Dynamic HDR, eARC, and high-bandwidth video.

The HDMI Forum estimates that in 2017, approximately 900 million HDMI-compatible products were shipped by over 1,800 companies that adopted HDMI, and that about 7 billion HDMI-supported devices are in use worldwide since the release of HDMI version 1.0 in 2002.

New HDMI 2.1 Version Spotlighted at CES

Robert Blanchard of Sony Electronics, Chairman of the HDMI Forum, said, “The development and launch of HDMI 2.1 last year was a major achievement of the HDMI Forum technical working group,” adding, “92 forum members are continuously improving the HDMI interface to meet the public’s demand for higher performance.”

With the recent announcement of the HDMI 2.1 standard and the distribution of premium HDMI cables, companies and manufacturers adopting HDMI are introducing new products that support HDMI 2.1, providing consumers with new experiences.

At the HDMI LA booth at CES, cables from major brands with anti-counterfeit genuine premium HDMI cable labels are displayed along with a label scanning app. The Premium Label can be certified after undergoing testing for all models based on cable length at an HDMI Authorized Test Center (ATC).

Currently, over 90 cable manufacturers and HDMI adopting companies are participating in the Premium HDMI Cable Certification Program to support 4K UHD products of their premium high-speed HDMI cables.

When using HDMI Alternate Mode (Alt Mode) for USB Type-C, you can directly connect an HDMI-supported source device and a display via the USB Type-C connector. Manufacturer prototypes featuring enhanced capabilities, including HDR and power delivery, can be viewed at the HDMI LA booth.
