Available for experience with a 5G autonomous vehicle concept cockpit

SK Telecom announced that it will showcase 5G autonomous driving technology with Kia Motors at 'CES 2018' held in Las Vegas, USA.

Through technological collaboration, SK Telecom and Kia Motors will showcase autonomous vehicle experience scenarios, a demonstration of real-time video transmission using a 5G network between Korea and the U.S., and 5G-based vehicle-to-object communication (V2X) technology.

First, the two companies installed a 5G autonomous vehicle concept cockpit to allow visitors to experience a future autonomous driving environment where they can work or enjoy entertainment inside the vehicle. Visitors can also sit in the driver's seat and experience the autonomous vehicle's interface and content.

In addition, the two companies will demonstrate real-time video transmission, allowing visitors seated in the cockpit to view 360-degree footage filmed in a 5G connected car in downtown Seoul at 'CES 2018'. Visitors will be able to experience what it feels like to travel through downtown Seoul in an autonomous vehicle. SK Telecom established a dedicated 5G test network between Korea and the U.S. by extending the Euljiro 5G test network in Seoul with a submarine cable to transmit real-time video.

In addition, visitors seated in the cockpit can experience advanced sound technology, such as an 'independent sound field control system' that plays sound separated by seat position and an 'active pedestrian warning sound emission system' that emits a warning sound only to pedestrians approaching the road.

Park Jin-hyo, Head of SK Telecom’s ICT Technology Institute, said, “When 5G technology is combined with autonomous driving, not only is safer driving possible, but various services can also be enjoyed inside the vehicle,” adding, “We will further advance 5G autonomous driving technology to provide differentiated services to customers.”
