KT applies battery-saving technology to voice calls nationwide
Published2018.01.16 10:45KT announced that it has applied network technology capable of reducing battery consumption to its nationwide commercial LTE network to extend customers' smartphone battery life during voice calls, in addition to data.
KT applied data battery saving technology (Connected mode Discontinuous Reception) to its nationwide LTE network for the first time in Korea in the first half of 2017, and subsequently extended it to voice calls.
C-DRX reduces battery consumption by automatically switching the smartphone's communication functions to low-power mode when there is no data transmission or reception during a call connection. It is easy to think that C-DRX cannot be applied to voice calls because, unlike data communication, there is continuous data; however, in the case of VoLTE, which is an LTE-based voice call, actual voice data is transmitted once every 20ms, so there is sufficient time to switch to low-power mode during periods when data is not being transmitted.
Leveraging these characteristics, KT continuously pursued optimization efforts to maximize battery consumption while maintaining voice call quality. In addition, the company identified additional technologies to reduce battery usage, such as data compression and control signal minimization, and completed their application to its nationwide commercial LTE network at the end of last year following multiple rounds of field testing.
In a test conducted earlier this year by the Korea Information and Communications Technology Association (TTA), an ICT standardization and testing and certification body, the battery saving effect of the iPhone X model was tested, and it was confirmed that voice call usage time increased by up to 51%. As a result, KT LTE subscribers can now enjoy extended battery life not only for data calls but also for voice calls without the need for a separate device upgrade.
"We have completed KT's battery saving technology by applying C-DRX technology to voice calls following data communication," said Kim Young-sik, Executive Vice President of KT INS Headquarters. "We will continue to realize differentiated customer satisfaction with warm, innovative technologies that care for people."

KT launches commercial 5Gbps next-generation Wi-Fi service, three times faster than existing Wi-Fi networks.
KT announced that it has completed the development of a next-generation Wi-Fi commercial Access Point (AP) with 5-gigabit-class speeds, approximately three times faster than existing gigabit Wi-Fi, and will launch commercial service on a world-first basis. The next-generation Wi-Fi AP developed by KT utilizes technology based on IEEE 802.11ax standard specifications and applies 8X8 MIMO technology to approximately double the frequency efficiency compared to conventional APs. Additionally, by adopting a 10G internet backhaul solution, stable Wi-Fi service provision is possible even in high-capacity traffic environments. KT has deployed the next-generation Wi-Fi at KT Square in Gwanghwamun and KT Avenue in Gangnam, and will begin commercial service for general customers starting on the 27th.

LTE is applied to the railway communication system for fast data transmission.
현재 음성통신 위주의 통신시스템(VHF, TRS)을 사용하고 있는 국내 철도통신시스템이 앞으로는 고속·대용량 정보전송이 가능한 4세대 통신기술인 LTE를 적용하여 국내에서 세계 최초로 개발한 철도통신시스템(LTE-R*)으로 새롭게 탈바꿈할 전망이다. 국토교통부는 국가 R&D를 통해 개발한(‘14. 12.～’17. 10., 163억 원) LTE 기반의 철도통신시스템(이하 “LTE-R”)의 검증을 완료하고, 일반·고속철도 전 노선에 설치하기 위해 ’27년까지 총 1조 1천억 원을 투입하는 ‘LTE-R 구축계획’을 수립했다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
