Experience 5G with ICT Igloo
Published2018.02.05 10:49SK Telecom announced that about 100 global telecommunications experts from the ITU visited the 'ICT Igloo' set up in front of Seoul City Hall over the weekend and experienced South Korea's advanced 5G technology and services.
The 'Igloo Festival,' which runs until February 25, is an event hosted by the Korea Industrial Skating Federation and the Korea Ski Association, and sponsor SK Telecom supported the installation of an 'ICT Igloo,' an experience space designed to create special winter memories for visitors.
The 'ICT Igloo' consists of two dome-shaped experience halls located right next to the ice rink in the plaza, where visitors can experience various 5G services, such as viewing the aurora using glasses-free virtual reality (VR) technology and experiencing a ride up a snowy mountain using robotics technology.
SK Telecom announced that the visit was decided after its 'ICT Igloo,' which vividly embodies the future vision created by 5G, received high praise from ITU officials.

SK Telecom Accelerates Early 5G Commercialization
SK텔레콤이 글로벌 5G 경쟁의 주도권을 확보하고 이를 상용화하기 위해 역량을 모으고 있다. SK텔레콤은 ‘5G 전사 TF(Task Force)’를 가동하고, 글로벌 표준 기반의 상용 통신장비를 개발하기 위해 2차 입찰제안요청서(RFP)를 발송했다고 밝혔다. TF는 SK텔레콤 4대 사업부인 MNO, 미디어, IoT/Data, 서비스플랫폼과 ICT인프라센터-기술원 등 전사에 걸쳐 약 200명으로 구성됐다.

KT Spreads 5G Network Construction Know-How to Global Markets
KT held a '5G RFP (Request for Proposal) Briefing Session for Selection of 5G Commercial System Development Partners' and provided attendees with an explanation of the 5G commercialization direction and major technical requirements. The 5G RFP includes 5G commercial system requirements based on 3GPP standards reflecting KT's 5G commercial network deployment plans. Through the briefing session, KT presented the 5G business direction and major technical requirements for 5G commercialization to vendors based on expertise accumulated during the preparation of the PyeongChang 5G service.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
