Moxa announced the launch of the PT-G7828/G7728, a rack-mounted Layer 2/Layer 3 managed switch that is compliant with IEC 61850-3 Edition 2 Class 2 and IEEE 1613 Class 2.

All 28 ports on the switch support full gigabit hardware time stamping as defined by IEEE 1588v2. Additionally, these switches offer selectable RJ45/SFP/PoE+ interfaces and dual LV/HV power modules, making them suitable for a variety of applications.

IEC 61850-3 Edition 2 was developed based on feedback gathered from equipment deployed in substations over many years. Compliance with this latest standard ensures that devices are rugged enough to be deployed in the harsh environments of substations. Furthermore, compliance with the Class 2 standard in Edition 2 ensures that devices can still transmit data successfully even when exposed to high levels of EMI, shock, or vibration.

All ports support hardware time stamp synchronization defined in the IEEE 1588v2 standard, ensuring time-aligned data transmission. To ensure interoperability of PTP functions across vendors, Moxa's products have undergone verification through UCAIug interoperability testing. Additionally, to meet the time accuracy requirements of power system applications, the device supports the IEEE C37.238 power profile.

The PT-G7828/G7728 switches are designed to simplify complex network integration and scalability. To achieve this, they feature a unique modular architecture, including four fixed Gigabit ports, six quad-port Gigabit module slots, and two power module slots, ensuring sufficient flexibility for a variety of applications. Hot-swappable functionality allows power and media modules to be replaced without system shutdown or impacting other communications passing through the switch, simplifying maintenance.

To facilitate rapid troubleshooting, the PT-G7828/G7728 functions as an event recorder, performing GOOSE monitoring and inspecting all GOOSE messages exchanged between IEDs. The switch can also continuously provide communication status information on GOOSE messages to a power SCADA or NMS system. GOOSE monitoring not only allows for early identification of potential problems, but also allows personnel to pinpoint the exact location of the problem. This feature helps detect problems quickly and prevent future failures and communication losses.
