Korea Electric Power Corporation Showcases Future Energy Through Power Group Companies at PyeongChang Olympics Promotional Pavilion
Published2018.02.09 09:32Korea Electric Power Corporation (Acting President Kim Si-ho), the first state-owned enterprise to serve as an official partner of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, will jointly operate the "Korea Electric Power-Power Group Companies Promotional Pavilion" with power group subsidiaries including Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea Southern Power Generation, Korea Central Power Generation, Korea Western Power Generation, Korea Southern Power Generation, Korea East-West Power Generation, Korea Electric Power Service, Korea Electric Power Data Network, Korea Electric Power Engineering & Construction, and Korea Nuclear Fuel during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics period.
The Korea Electric Power-Power Group Companies Promotional Pavilion, which will present a future smart energy world and compelling attractions, will showcase the smart future energy world that Korea Electric Power and the power group companies will lead under the theme of "Smart Energy City Unfolds in PyeongChang" through video shows and hands-on experiences.
Large display panels on the front of the pavilion will present visitor welcome videos, Korea Electric Power and power group companies promotional videos, pavilion teaser videos, and Olympic support message videos, drawing the attention of visitors to the PyeongChang Olympic Plaza, while the interior of the pavilion consists of a main show space featuring multimedia video shows, various VR experience spaces, and a power group companies introduction area.
The video show, screened at one-hour intervals, presents the smart future energy world created by Korea Electric Power and the power group companies through spectacular multimedia imagery including three-panel video displays, lighting, and audio effects. The implementation depicts wind, water, and light energy being stored in a central energy core from nature and transmitted to humanity, with the emergence of a smart energy city centered on renewable energy and energy efficiency systems.
Flying performance, held twice daily, features dynamic live performances utilizing wire devices and lighting with themes of energy's past and future. In the VR (Virtual Reality) experience space, visitors can become athletes in Winter Olympics events such as biathlon, alpine skiing, and bobsleigh, experiencing power facilities including offshore wind and solar power, and vividly experiencing future smart cities such as electric vehicle infrastructure.
Korea Electric Power anticipates that through the operation of the Korea Electric Power-Power Group Companies Promotional Pavilion, it will promote the excellence and future vision of Korea's electric power business to domestic and international visitors attending the global sports festival, while serving as a distinctive attraction providing unique experiences and points of interest at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The PyeongChang Winter Olympics is now 332 days away. Following a vision announcement two years ago to showcase the world's first 5G trial service at the PyeongChang Olympics, KT held a press briefing on the 14th (Tuesday) at PyeongChang Alpensia Resort. The event began with a congratulatory video message from the organizing committee chairman and proceeded with demonstrations of autonomous driving 5G buses and drone delivery services, a 'VR Walkthrough' experience of the Olympic torch relay in virtual reality, and the public opening of the PyeongChang 5G Center showcasing four immersive services. The four immersive services are Sync View, Interactive Time Slice, 360° VR Live, and Omni Point View.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.

ETRI Develops 200Gbps Photodetector… Initiates Localization of Optical Receivers for AI Data Centers
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a photodetector device that processes optical signals of approximately 200Gbps per channel for the first time in Korea. This device is a component that converts optical signals into electrical signals and determines the reception performance of AI data centers and 5G/6G communication networks. ETRI achieved bandwidth of 70GHz or higher and optical responsivity of 0.75A/W or higher, and integrated an indium phosphide lens on the rear of the chip to enhance optical reception efficiency and alignment convenience. The technology was presented at OECC 2025 and was recently published in the international academic journal 'Optics Express'.
