Samsung Electronics and KT Skylife Demonstrate Ultra High-Definition 8K UHD Broadcasting

Samsung Electronics and KT Skylife demonstrated nationwide 8K UHD broadcasting using the 2018 Samsung QLED TV, which is scheduled for launch this year. This trial broadcast was conducted in a method where KT Skylife received 8K UHD video transmitted through ETRI's Chollian satellite and transmitted it to Samsung QLED TV via antenna. Samsung Electronics enhanced the possibility of ushering in a full-fledged era of ultra high-definition broadcasting by implementing beautiful landscapes of Ulleungdo in 8K video through this demonstration.
Samsung Electronics QLED TV is evaluated as a 'TV suitable for 8K resolution' with superior contrast ratio, color reproduction, and refined screen expression even on large displays. The product provided in this demonstration is equipped with AI high-definition conversion technology that converts video content at SD level and above to 8K-level image quality. 8K (7680x4320 resolution) is a next-generation ultra high-definition broadcast that is more than four times clearer than 4K (3480x2160 resolution) UHD, and Japan has already been conducting trial broadcasting during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
This demonstration was based on the H.265 standard high-efficiency video compression method in the Ka band (20~30GHz) of the Chollian satellite, and the DVB-S2x method with improved transmission efficiency compared to existing methods was applied to satellite transmission, making 100Mbps-class 8K UHD satellite broadcasting transmission and reception possible.
Choo Jong-seok, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business Division, said "This year is a time when important sporting events such as the Olympics and World Cup are being held consecutively, allowing us to properly experience the 8K image quality that Samsung Electronics is showcasing," and added "We will further solidify our leadership in the 8K TV market through the 2018 QLED TV."
Lee Han, Head of Technology at KT Skylife, stated "Satellite 8K UHD broadcasting has the advantage of receiving UHD broadcasts from anywhere in the country, including islands and mountainous regions," and added "Starting with the success of this trial broadcast, we will make efforts to accelerate the era of 8K ultra high-definition broadcasting."
