Expanding FPGA Video Analytics Solutions for Multi-Channel D1 Resolution Video Surveillance Systems
Hong Kong, April 17, 2011—Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced a new 4-channel SD (standard definition) video analytics solution targeting DVR (digital video recorder) and NVR (network video recorder) systems for surveillance, extending its leadership in FPGA-based video surveillance solutions. Altera's latest video analytics solution was developed jointly with Eutecus and enables customers to simultaneously analyze four D1 480p/30fps (frames-per-second) video channels using a single FPGA. Customers can quickly and cost-effectively add this performance to their existing SD surveillance investments without purchasing new cameras that provide integrated analytics functionality.
Altera's video analytics solution integrates the low-cost, low-power Cyclone® IV FPGA and Eutecus's Multi-Core Video Analytics Engine (MVE™) IP (intellectual property) core, which performs analytics functions on the FPGA.
Compared to DSP or traditional server-based approaches, this solution enables designers to reduce costs by replacing multiple DSP processors with a single FPGA while reducing power consumption to under 3W. Altera's FPGA-based video surveillance solution is ideal for designers developing various applications including banks, educational facilities, cities, industrial, government, and transportation surveillance systems.
Because this FPGA-based video analytics solution is highly flexible, it enables designers to customize their video surveillance systems. Eutecus's MVE™ IP robustly integrates parallel algorithms and specialized multi-core coprocessors with various Altera® Nios® II cores integrated in the Cyclone IV FPGA.
The solution is provided with a software GUI that enables designers to customize event-detection parameters and rules for their proprietary applications. Eutecus's IP includes a robust API (application programming interface) that can be used to interface with customers' video management systems or to develop customized GUI solutions.

Altera's low-cost, low-power video surveillance solution portfolio targets both HD (high-definition) and SD (standard definition) resolution systems. In 2011, Altera and Eutecus launched the industry's first FPGA-based video surveillance solution capable of providing the processing power required for full HD 1080p/30fps real-time video processing performance. By using the same processing engine, both companies were able to quickly customize the HD engine for a 4-channel D1 resolution system that supports additional customer requirements for lower-resolution multi-channel solutions.
Availability
Both the 4-channel D1 video analytics solution and the 1080p HD video analytics solution are currently available through Altera. Altera provides a single-vendor model for the entire video analytics solution. Since IP and FPGAs can be purchased directly through Altera, video surveillance system development can be significantly simplified. This purchase model eliminates the need to work with multiple vendors regarding licensing fees, NRE costs, royalties, and related matters.
