Launch of industry's first unlimited LTE plan with no speed or data limits

A rate plan has been launched that allows unlimited Long Term Evolution (LTE) usage without restrictions on basic data allowances or speed limits.

LG Uplus held a press conference at its Yongsan headquarters in Seoul on the 22nd to launch new rate plans and announced its future business plans.

Until now, unlimited plans have limited speeds to a maximum of 3 to 5 Mbps once customers exhausted their basic data allowance. This was a measure intended to prevent data traffic overload and maintain network quality.

The newly launched 'Data Plan with No Speed/Capacity Worries' is a service that allows unlimited LTE data usage without a separate basic data allowance for a monthly fee of 88,000 won (including VAT). There is no '3Mbps' speed limit (QoS) applied by mobile carriers after the basic allowance is exhausted.

"According to data analysis, half of the customers using the Data Special plan experienced 100% data depletion, and 60% of them experienced speed throttling," said Kim Se-ra, Senior Vice President and Head of Marketing Group at LG Uplus. "We launched this to resolve customer inconvenience by providing high-quality plans for current users while lowering household communication costs."

The benefits of 'Shared Data' have also been enhanced. The limit for Shared Data, which includes sending/receiving, sharing, and tearing, is provided up to a maximum of 40GB per month. Since it is provided separately from the user's own data usage, it amounts to 40GB of data that can be sent and received.

LG Uplus expects an increase in family customers with the launch of the 'Data Plan with No Worries About Speed or Capacity.' This is because even if only one person in a family of four subscribes to the plan, it becomes possible to provide 13GB per month and 156GB per year to each of the remaining three members.

Customers using a second smart device other than a smartphone can share data for free on up to two devices within a 40GB data sharing limit. The same applies to tethering.

LG Uplus explained that it completed pre-investment by predicting network overload while preparing to launch unlimited plans.

Hwang Hyun-sik, Vice President of the PS Division, stated regarding how to handle the data overload issues caused by unlimited plans, “We have closely examined which regions pose risks. We have made investments to address this, and preparations are now complete.”

Since last year, LG Uplus has been implementing policies aimed at resolving customer inconveniences, such as the double data no-contract program, the abolition of the highest-priced rate plans, the implementation of unlimited data sharing between family members, and the waiver of early termination fees for selective contracts for long-term Uplus customers. Going forward, the company plans to continue focusing on benefits rather than price competition.

Vice President Hwang stated, “As selective contract discount rates rise, a red light has been turned on for the growth prospects of telecommunication companies.” "We are not in a position to be price-competitive," they stated. "We set the price at a level that allows it to coexist with existing plans while enabling many customers to benefit. Our current direction is to clearly define our target customer base and enhance convenience."
