TI Korea (CEO Jaejin Kim, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) August 17, 2011 – TI, raising the bar for ultra-low power Near Field Communication (NFC) devices, announced the TRF7970A transceiver, the industry's lowest-power contactless short-range communication device. Designed for infrastructure applications, the TRF7970A offers eight selectable power modes ranging from a sub-1µA power-down mode to a 120mA full-power mode, extending battery life by up to two times compared to competitors. The transceiver comes with easy-to-configure software, enabling developers to quickly get started with designs. Royalty-free stacks are compatible with a variety of ultra-low power MSP430 microcontrollers. Additionally, developers can directly access control registers, allowing for easy, precise tuning of various parameters to deliver peak performance in any application. Based on TI's reliable RFID product platform, the new TRF7970A supports 13.56 MHz reader/writer performance as well as peer-to-peer (P2P) communication and card emulation, while maintaining pin-to-pin compatibility with TI's existing 13.56 MHz reader, the TRF7960. Demand for P2P communication continues to grow in applications such as medical equipment, secure pairing, and payments. This enables users to more easily utilize continuously evolving features and applications. For example, NFC can establish Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® technology sessions between devices without consumer interaction, enable the sharing and utilization of content-rich data such as Point of Sale (PoS) coupons, and support the convenient exchange of files and content between devices.
