Gartner Announces 25.7% Increase in Global Server Revenue in Q4 2017
Published2018.03.09 11:10Gartner announced that revenue in the global server market in the fourth quarter of 2017 rose 25.7% year-over-year, and shipments also increased by 8.8%. For the entire year of 2017, server shipments and revenue increased by 3.1% and 10.4%, respectively.
Jeffrey Hewitt, Vice President at Gartner, explained, “The server market in the fourth quarter of 2017 saw positive results for server shipments and revenue in all regions, driven by strong global economic conditions.”
The server market in the fourth quarter of 2017 showed varying results by region. Revenue in North America and the Asia-Pacific region rose by 27.6% and 35.1%, respectively, while shipments also increased by 9.7% and 21.2%, respectively.
Sales in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region showed solid growth at 19.9%, but shipments decreased by 7.9%. Sales in Japan rose by 4.8%, while shipments fell by 5.1%. Latin America was the only region to record a decline, with both shipments and sales falling by 4.7% and 2.9%, respectively.
In the fourth quarter of 2017, Dell EMC and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (hereinafter HPE) competed fiercely for the top spot in revenue in the global server market. Dell EMC secured the number one position with a market share of 19.4%, growing 39.9% year-on-year, while HPE closely followed with a market share of 19.3%, growing 5.5%. Inspur Electronics recorded an all-time high growth rate of 127.8%.
In the fourth quarter of 2017, revenue in the x86 server market increased by 23.7%, and shipments increased by 8.9%.
2017 Overall Server Market Results
Total global server shipments increased by 3.1% in 2017, while total revenue grew by 10.4%. Vice President Hewitt stated, “As end users increasingly utilize digital business solutions, enterprises and hyperscale data centers worldwide have achieved positive results.” He further predicted, “It is expected that enterprise end users will continue to use a hybrid approach combining on-premises and public cloud solutions depending on the purpose of their server applications, and this trend will sustain the growth of the server market in 2018.”

Teradata Korea announced that it has been selected as a leader in Gartner's 2018 Magic Quadrant for Data Management Solutions for Analytics (DMSA) for the 16th consecutive time. According to Gartner, a leading global IT consulting firm, global smartphone sales to end users in the fourth quarter of 2017 fell to 408 million units, down 5.6% compared to the same period last year, marking the first decline since 2004.
