LG Electronics Reaches Out to Startups for the Future of the 4th Industrial Revolution

LG Electronics and the Korea Information & Communication Technology Promotion Agency (KIPA) have signed a "Business Agreement for the Discovery and Nurturing of Promising Startups" to take the lead in revitalizing startups in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Yong-soo, Vice Minister of Science and ICT; Yoon Jong-rok, President of KIPA; and Park Il-pyung, President and CTO of LG Electronics.
LG Electronics has decided to open the source code for an open version of webOS in accordance with the agreement. The webOS source code can be used for free by accessing the webOS developer site. webOS is a proprietary platform that LG Electronics applies to smart TVs, digital signage, and the like.
LG Electronics plans to select promising startups recommended by the Korea Information and Communications Technology Promotion Agency (KIPA) to transfer its webOS development know-how and provide workspace at LG Science Park in Magok-dong, Gangseo-gu. It also plans to participate in global open source events, such as the Open Source Summit and OSCON, together with the startups.
WebOS supports web standards such as HTML5 (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS3 (Cascading Style Sheet), making development easy. It also has the advantage that LG Electronics has already verified its stability by applying it to smart TVs, signage, and other devices.
Kim Yong-soo, the Second Vice Minister of Science and ICT, said, “Fostering innovative startups is more important than ever to respond to the technological paradigm of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” adding, “The government will also strengthen support policies for the sustainable growth of startups possessing innovative technologies.”
Yoon Jong-rok, President of the Korea Information & Communication Technology Promotion Agency (KIPA), stated, “We will foster mutual cooperation between global IT companies and the public sector to discover promising startups and support their growth into companies that lead the future.”
LG Electronics CTO Park Il-pyung emphasized, “We will lead the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where artificial intelligence and robots are fully utilized, through mutually beneficial cooperation with various partners.”
LG Electronics is continuously expanding its software ecosystem based on three major open strategies: open platform, open partnership, and open connectivity.

LG Electronics Targets the European Air Conditioning Market with High-Efficiency, Eco-Friendly Solutions
LG Electronics is participating in "Mostra Convegno Expo 2018" and showcasing a "comprehensive air conditioning solution" that evolves based on the convergence and fusion of high-efficiency and eco-friendly technologies and products, targeting the European air conditioning market worth approximately $25 billion annually. Europe has strict environmental regulations and shows high preference for high-efficiency and eco-friendly products. Based on differentiated technological capabilities, LG Electronics achieved double-digit growth in the European air conditioning market last year. This year, the company plans to continue high growth by expanding its heating solution business, which is in high demand in the market. LG Electronics' third-generation new product "ThermaV" showcased at this exhibition is a product targeting Northern and Eastern Europe where winter temperatures are low, and is an eco-friendly and high-efficiency heating solution for residential and small-to-medium-sized buildings. While conventional boilers typically use fossil fuels such as gas and oil as an energy source, this product is an "air to water heat pump (AWHP)" that extracts energy from outside air to produce warm water.
