Full-scale development of technology for personalized medical services

Technology development for personalized medical services, ranging from disease diagnosis to prevention, is proceeding in earnest by intelligently analyzing medical big data such as an individual's living environment, habits, clinical data, and genomic information.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced that it signed a business agreement with the Seoul Institute of Medical Science at its premises to conduct precision medicine research by applying artificial intelligence (AI) technology to medical fields.

ETRI has been developing 'self-adaptive analysis engine technology' that analyzes data composed of various variables based on big data and artificial intelligence. The research team plans to test and verify the developed core technology in the medical field through the Seoul Institute of Medical Science, which is rich in medical data.

Currently, ETRI is conducting research on disease risk analysis using its medical data analysis engine (CybreDx). The company explained that it first achieved very high accuracy in diagnosing dementia patients by extracting key factors through the analysis of their data. The analysis engine can also be extended for the diagnosis of other diseases.

'CybreDx' is an artificial intelligence technology that utilizes new machine learning models and cognitive data analysis algorithms. The goal is to transition to a healthcare system that moves beyond the limitations of current post-onset, passive, and temporary diagnosis and treatment focused on the disease, and provides proactive, full-cycle diagnosis and prevention centered on daily health.

Therefore, in the future, the research team plans to collaborate with the Seoul Institute of Medical Science to analyze integrated data—including genomic and clinical data storage and analysis technologies, as well as diagnostic equipment log records—to jointly research early diagnosis and prevention technologies for various diseases.

Baek Ok-gi, a research fellow at ETRI’s IDX Core Technology Research Lab, stated, “Research on the analysis of medical data using artificial intelligence is becoming a global hot topic. While modern healthcare is a system that treats diseases after they occur, ETRI’s system identifies signs of disease before onset.”

ETRI added that analyzing medical data with artificial intelligence technology to help healthy people prevent diseases in advance will be the future of healthcare services.
