May 8, 2012 - Wolfson Microelectronics Korea (CEO Kim Ki-tae, www.wolfsonmicro.com) today unveiled a next-generation HD audio system-on-chip (SoC) and voice processor DSP. This product enables smartphone manufacturers to deliver crystal-clear voice calls that sound like face-to-face conversation even in noisy environments.
The WM5102, which integrates transmit path (Tx) noise reduction, echo cancellation, and receive path (Rx) noise reduction technologies, reduces ambient noise during voice calls by up to 90%, enabling natural conversations not only indoors but also in noisy environments such as around busy train stations and loud bars.
The WM5102 is specially designed for smartphones, tablet PCs, and other portable audio devices, supporting both SLIMbus and I2S interfaces. It also enables OEM manufacturers to implement their audio performance across all product platforms using Wolfson's complete audio SoC solution, providing a truly platform-compatible system.
Additionally, the WM5102 employs Wolfson's advanced audio DSP that delivers high-quality audio experience with minimal power consumption, providing 102dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 50 MIPS processing capability.
The WM5102 is up to 20% smaller than competing components and requires up to 17 fewer external components. This significantly reduces PCB space and material costs in manufacturing.
With a digital mixing architecture, the WM5102 is a highly flexible and future-proof scalable solution that supports various use cases and enables easy integration and rapid development.
Additionally, the WM5102's digital core provides a powerful combination of programmable DSP and fixed-function signal processing blocks, including filters, parametric equalizer, dynamic range control (DRC), and sample rate converter.
Duncan Macadie, manager of Wolfson's Audio Hub business unit, explained, "The WM5102 amplifies the DSP capabilities of the Wolfson Audio Hub to a level not available in today's market, while providing transmit noise reduction functionality that works seamlessly with other audio processing functions while maintaining ultra-low power performance."
He added, "Customers are looking for highly integrated solutions that can significantly reduce manufacturing costs, and by adding the SLIMbus interface, we have enabled customers to use audio platforms across all products regardless of which applications they use."
Availability
Wolfson's WM5102 is currently available for sampling in W-CSP package.
