Unveiled ATSC 3.0-based single-frequency network technology, commercialization of transceiver equipment

Ultra High Definition (UHD) transmission technology, originally developed by domestic researchers and led to become an international standard, is being commercialized for TVs through technology transfer.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) participated in the 'National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) 2018,' the world's largest broadcasting equipment exhibition held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the United States for four days starting on the 9th, and showcased the latest broadcasting technologies.

ETRI first introduced ATSC 3.0-based Single Frequency Network (SFN) technology as a new broadcasting and telecommunications media technology attracting global attention. This technology is designed to construct broadcasting networks. Transmitting and receiving equipment has been commercialized and is being used worldwide.

Next, the research team showcased ATSC 3.0-based shared viewing antenna system technology. This technology, scheduled for commercialization at the end of this year, enables all households in apartments or multi-family homes to watch TV simultaneously using a single antenna.

In addition, ETRI received a great response by showcasing multi-channel HD technology that combines ATSC 3.0-based Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM) and Scalable Video Compression (SHVC) technologies. ETRI is currently working to enter the US market with this technology, which is a broadcasting device capable of real-time use.

Finally, the research team showcased ATSC 3.0-based broadcast gateway (GW) virtualization system technology. It is equipment that can be used as software by virtually uploading broadcasting equipment through a place like a cloud system.
The research team explained that the above technologies are equipment developed by ETRI not only for demonstration but also built based on actual ATSC international standards to enable service.

ETRI expects that participating in this world-renowned exhibition will allow it to actively promote the level of Korea's broadcasting and telecommunications media technology and contribute to Korean broadcasting equipment companies securing a leading position in the global market.

In particular, at NAB 2018, following last year, ETRI held a joint exhibition in the UHD Theme Pavilion with domestic broadcasters (KBS, MBC, SBS) and small and medium-sized equipment developers under the slogan 'Korea UHD On-Air.' This is expected to be of great help to domestic companies in promoting ATSC 3.0 broadcasting equipment and expanding into overseas markets.

Lee Su-in, Head of the Broadcasting and Media Research Institute at ETRI, stated, "We will use our participation in the world's largest broadcasting exhibition to secure the excellence and reliability of our broadcasting technology, facilitate the entry of domestic broadcasting equipment companies into overseas markets, and further revitalize domestic and international UHDTV broadcasting services."
