36VIN, 600mA Micromodule Step-Down Regulator Launch
Published2012.05.09 18:31May 9, 2012 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the development of a DC/DC step-down µModule® regulator (model: LTM8029) featuring ultra-low dropout voltage and wide input/output voltage range, with standby current consumption as low as 5µA. The LTM8029, capable of supplying up to 600mA, extends battery operating time and provides the following two benefits: (1) In standby mode it consumes only 5µA of quiescent current and 0.9µA during shutdown, resulting in very low battery discharge current, and (2) the extremely low 0.6V dropout voltage (at 600mA) allows extended operating time as battery operating voltage approaches the output voltage. Furthermore, the LTM8029 features a wide input range of 4.5V ~ 36V (40V maximum) and output range of 1.2V ~ 18V, making it suitable for applications such as aerospace, heavy equipment, battery stack energy storage, and factory automation/robotics.
The LTM8029 integrates an inductor, power switch, DC/DC controller and additional circuitry in a compact 6.25mm x 11.25mm x 3.42mm BGA package. Operating efficiency at 600mA/3.3VOUT with input voltage ranges of 5VIN, 12VIN, and 24VIN is 84%, 79%, and 75% respectively. At maximum current of 600mA, the junction temperature rise when converting 36VIN to 3.3VOUT is as low as 17°C. The LTM8029 features adjustable switching frequency from 200kHz to 2.2MHz, making it useful for applications requiring switching noise to be maintained within specific ranges. In addition to positive-to-positive conversion, the LTM8029 can also be used to regulate negative output voltages. Product pricing starts at $6.60 per unit based on 1,000-unit quantities. ST Microelectronics has unveiled the 'STSPIN9P' series of 75V motor drive ICs tailored for 48V-class industrial drive system design.
