Cognex Launches the DataMan 470 Series Fixed-Mount Barcode Readers
Published2018.05.10 11:33Cognex announced the launch of the DataMan 470 series of fixed-mount barcode readers. Designed for high-throughput, high-speed manufacturing and logistics lines, the DataMan 470 is Cognex's most powerful industrial barcode reader to date.
The DataMan 470 features new, patent-pending HDR+ (High Dynamic Range Plus) imaging technology. It also features a high-sensitivity, high-resolution 3.1-megapixel sensor, providing a wider field of view, enabling coverage of a wider inspection area with fewer cameras, increasing versatility.
Patent-pending HDR+ technology enhances image quality, enabling accurate reading of small codes even in lighting environments with uneven contrast or significant local variation. It also reduces image exposure time, making it ideal for reading high-speed moving objects. Furthermore, the reading range is increased by 30% compared to previous models, allowing for flexible application even when object sizes change.
In particular, it can simultaneously read dozens of different code formats that were previously impossible to read with existing technologies at high speeds, and even when the contrast between the code and the background is poor or multiple object codes must be read at once, the task can be completed with a single DataMan 470. It can improve line speeds by up to 82% in demanding applications such as automotive parts tracking, tire identification, airport baggage recognition, and moving code reading and automatic sorting, while also reducing equipment design and operating costs by replacing expensive, complex solutions.
The DataMan 470's technology platform includes multi-core processing power, cutting-edge decoding algorithms, and modular optical configuration options, significantly enhancing speed and flexibility. DataMan customers can optimize their production processes by analyzing barcode quality metrics with Cognex Explorer Real Time Monitoring technology. The DataMan 470 also features an enhanced DataMan Installation Tool, enabling users to quickly and easily install and configure the product.

Cognex announced that it will participate in 'Automation World 2018' held on March 28th under the theme of 'The Future of Vision'. Cognex has launched "Cognex VisionPro Suite," a deep learning-based machine vision software. It addresses limitations that existing machine vision technology could not overcome, such as defect detection in irregular patterns and recognition of highly deformed patterns. The company stated that it will target the domestic vision market through this offering. Machine vision is a technology that recognizes and collects sophisticated patterns and features within images, then performs precision guidance, inspection, measurement, and high-speed reading. It is a necessary technology for increasing automation and efficiency in smart factories. During the manufacturing process, the alignment stage requires precise positioning. If accurate placement is not achieved, significant time and cost are required, which can increase overall expenses and the proportion of defective products. The most prominent characteristic of machine vision is precision. It identifies and confirms minute details and features down to the micrometer level that humans cannot achieve. Cameras at the front capture and measure line segments, edges, and other precise details, and correct any deviation from the alignment position. This is why machine vision is necessary for automation. Existing machine vision systems revealed limitations in detecting defects in unstructured backgrounds, detecting complex patterns with significant deformations, and character recognition. For defect patterns that humans can recognize at a glance, vision systems faced difficulties in inspection. For these reasons, Vietnam's current manufacturing market has over 500,000 people engaged in inspection work. While generally efficient for overall automation, existing systems have shown weakness in the detailed detection required by smart factories' "customized production." Machine vision enables inspection through rules created by various signal processing methods. Creating rules to detect irregular and highly deformed patterns that humans can immediately recognize is difficult. Cognex VisionPro Suite goes beyond rule-based approaches by applying human learning to deep learning, enabling pattern detection that only humans could previously solve.
