Significantly improve solar inverter efficiency with the innovative CoolSiC™ 1200V SiC JFET product family
May 22, 2012, Seoul — Infineon Technologies (Korea Representative Director Seung-soo Lee) has been able to further strengthen its market leadership in the field of Silicon Carbide (SiC) products with the new CoolSiC™ 1200V SiC JFET family. This innovative product family is based on the technological expertise Infineon has accumulated over more than a decade in SiC technology development and the capabilities built in high-quality mass production.
Jan-Willem Reynaerts, Head of High Voltage Power Conversion Products at Infineon Technologies, said, “Infineon has continuously developed innovative technologies targeting markets requiring efficient power management. CoolSiC™ is a highly innovative technology designed to take solar inverter performance to the next level. Infineon’s new SiC JFET technology enables customers to develop next-generation environmental protection solutions.”
The new CoolSiC™ 1200V SiC JFET products offer very low switching losses compared to IGBTs, enabling higher switching frequencies without compromising overall system efficiency. This allows for the use of smaller passive components, thereby reducing the overall solution size and weight and lowering system costs. Alternatively, it enables the implementation of higher output power solutions within the same inverter housing.
To enable the safe and convenient use of always-on JFET technology, Infineon developed a concept called Direct Drive technology. This technology achieves safe system startup conditions and enables fast, controlled switching by combining an external low-voltage MOSFET and a dedicated driver IC with the JFET.
CoolSiC™ JFET products feature a monolithically integrated body diode and achieve switching performance comparable to that of external SiC Schottky barrier diodes. Therefore, it provides optimal efficiency, reliability, safety, and ease of use.
supply
Samples of CoolSiC™ JFET products and driver IC products are scheduled to be supplied starting in the second quarter of 2012. Mass production for OEMs is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2013.
