Arm Acquires Enterprise Data Management Firm Treasure Data
Implementation of a Device-to-Data IoT Platform

Arm acquired enterprise data management company Treasure Data and implemented a new IoT platform, the 'Pelion IoT Platform'.

The Internet of Things (IoT) enables new forms of business management. IoT systems can be applied in various ways, such as in buildings that anticipate and proactively respond to tenant needs, or in retailers that streamline operations by utilizing data streams from stores and warehouses. Consequently, investment in IoT is a distinct trend. A prime example is the SoftBank Vision Fund, which has pledged $100 billion to support advanced technology.

IDC predicted that the amount of data to be generated or copied will reach a staggering 163 zettabytes by 2025. This represents a tenfold increase compared to 16.1 zettabytes in 2016. However, according to a 2018 study commissioned by Arm and conducted by Forrester Consulting, 67% of the companies surveyed faced issues related to data storage.

Modern IoT platforms must enable easy provisioning, updating, connecting, and management of devices, and be designed to facilitate the easy understanding of the massive amount of data generated by IoT. Furthermore, various companies must collaborate to build a robust ecosystem so that IoT can deliver value. It is beyond the capacity of a single company to do all of this.

To handle the complexity of large amounts of data, enterprises must be able to seamlessly connect and manage IoT devices, as well as manage data flow. Arm acquired Treasure Data to build a complete solution that handles all of an enterprise's data-related requirements, ranging from devices to data.

Treasure Data is an enterprise data management company that possesses technology to aggregate and transform large-scale, scattered data. Treasure Data's technology can process all data regardless of its source, including CRMs, e-commerce systems, edge devices, IoT devices, and third-party data. Customers can leverage this technology to extract practical value from heterogeneous piles of data.
Arm created the Arm Pelion IoT Platform by combining the connectivity management technologies of Treasure Data and Stream, another recently acquired company, with its knowledge of Arm Mbed Cloud and IoT hardware. Through Pelion, enterprises can seamlessly and securely connect and manage IoT devices and data at any scale. Designed to operate in public and private clouds, as well as on-premise and hybrid environments, Pelion provides flexibility to IoT system architectures.

Pelion supports secure and consistent IoT device provisioning, management, and updates for all IoT system setups. In addition, it supports various wireless connectivity standards for all devices, regions, or use cases, including eSIM security identity verification.

Pelion provides a robust integrated partner ecosystem comprising over 140 partners, including silicon companies, mobile network operators (MNOs), channels, and technology providers. It also integrates a significant portion of the technology that contributed to Treasure Data’s cloud-based Enterprise Customer Data Platform (CDATA) establishing its current market position. Treasure Data offers unique capabilities to process massive web, mobile, and IoT data streams, enabling approximately 300 customers to work with a massive scale of device data points.

There are many vertical IoT platforms that focus on specific device groups. There are also platforms that concentrate on specific types of data insights to support. Furthermore, there are vendor-specific platforms designed to connect customers with specific clouds. They all share the commonality of providing 'specific' services. Pelion is different. It is a truly horizontal platform capable of processing all types of data (internal and external), connecting to any cloud, and managing diverse devices and connections. In other words, it is a platform capable of delivering an 'AAA IoT experience' by providing capabilities applicable to 'all devices, all data, and all clouds.'

Currently, Treasure Data's platform processes 2 million events per second, hundreds of thousands of queries, and 50 trillion records daily, creating value by combining this data with existing enterprise analytics tools.

Although Treasure Data technology is being applied to Pelion, the Treasure Data platform is set to continue as a standalone technology service for existing and new customers.
