Hytera Provides PMR Support to Laos Dam Collapse Rescue Team
Published2018.08.02 17:05Hytera, a PMR (Professional Mobile Radio) communication solution company, is providing customized PMR solutions to volunteers and rescue teams involved in the dam collapse accident in Laos.
On the evening of July 23, the Sepian-Senamnoi hydroelectric power plant dam under construction in southeastern Laos collapsed. As a result, hundreds of people are missing, over 6,600 have lost their homes, and more than 3,000 are still awaiting rescue. Volunteers and rescue workers are doing their utmost despite the dire conditions, with most transportation facilities destroyed by continuous heavy rains.
Following the accident, several civic groups planning to depart for Laos for volunteer work requested PMR support from Hytera. Hytera immediately established an emergency communications plan. By 1:00 AM on the 27th (KST), Hytera's Laos branch and local distributors had completed preparations for the necessary communication equipment. Local technical engineers from the overseas customer service department went on 24-hour standby for immediate emergency assistance.
BSR members in the rescue operation
At 8 p.m. on the 27th (KST), Hytera received a message from the command center of the China-based non-governmental humanitarian organization 'Blue Sky Rescue (BSR)' stating that 'the command center is unable to contact rescue workers in time due to weak communication signals.' At BSR's request, the Hytera technical team developed a customized emergency communication solution and quickly delivered the equipment to its destination.
Hytera provided BSR support during past disaster situations, such as the Nepal earthquake, the Myanmar floods, and the Quang Ming landslide. Hytera will continue to pay close attention to the disaster in Laos and plans to continue providing rapid assistance.

SKT Takes Care of the Safety of 2G Phone Customers Who Cannot Receive Disaster Text Messages
SK Telecom is launching a mobile phone replacement support campaign in cooperation with the government, targeting 590,000 2G phone customers who cannot receive emergency text messages. This is being implemented in response to the government's request to enhance national safety, with an initial six-month implementation period. The period can be extended as needed in the future. When 2G phone customers unable to receive emergency text messages switch to one of six LTE phones designated for the campaign, SK Telecom will provide additional subsidies and allow the purchase of the LTE phone at zero device cost. The six LTE phone models were selected based on similar form factors and features, taking into consideration that 2G phone customers primarily use foldable phones and feature phones. Additionally, SK Telecom is exceptionally allowing 2G phone customers switching to LTE phones to subscribe to seven 2G rate plans, enabling them to continue using their services at the existing rate level. After subscription, customers can continue using the plan unless they change it. Considering that 2G rate plans do not include basic data allowances, a data blocking function is applied by default to prevent unwanted data charges. Customers wishing to use data can either disable the data blocking function or subscribe to an LTE rate plan.

KT to take charge of disaster network maintenance
KT announced that it has signed a contract with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety regarding the 'Disaster Safety Communication Network (hereinafter referred to as disaster network) control and maintenance operations.' Following its award of the disaster network pilot project in 2015, KT is now also winning the maintenance operations contract, and expects to further strengthen its expertise in the disaster safety communications field. Above all, KT places significance on the fact that, as the pilot project operator, it has secured continuity in disaster safety operations by taking on both the direct construction of the network and its subsequent maintenance. Under this contract, KT will perform maintenance operations through the end of this year on disaster network-related equipment constructed during the disaster network pilot project period in the Seoul and Gangwon (Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, Gangneung) regions, including 221 main control units and base stations, approximately 2,500 portable terminals, and other related equipment.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
