ST, Enhanced LoRaWAN Service Delivery through Free Embedded SW Update

STMicroelectronics (ST) has unveiled the latest I-CUBE-LRWAN expansion package for its STM32 microcontroller product family while updating the implementation of the recently approved LoRa Alliance LoRaWAN 1.0.3 specification, thereby expanding its potential for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications operating in Low-Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN).
The I-CUBE-LRWAN expansion package is configured as a set of libraries and application examples for all ultra-low-power STM32 MCU portfolios, including STM32L0, STM32L1, STM32L4, and STM32L4+ series microcontrollers operating in IoT terminal devices. In particular, as interest in security issues has increased among IoT developers, the library now includes a dedicated API capable of managing secure elements such as the STSAFE-A product family, and can handle various data protection functions.
Additionally, to enhance application flexibility, the LoRaWAN 1.0.3 update includes compatibility with Class B devices. The three device classes provide flexibility based on power efficiency to accommodate all IoT implementation cases operating in the unlicensed radio frequency spectrum of 433MHz~928MHz.
The upgraded I-CUBE-LRWAN package provides drivers for Semtech's new sx126x wireless transceiver and supports the sx1261dvk1bas, sx1262dvk1cas, and sx1262dvk1das shields. This package also includes applications suitable for execution on the B-L072Z-LRWAN1 Discovery Kit featuring Murata's CMWX1ZZABZ-091 LoRa/Sigfox module and NUCLEO-L053R8, NUCLEO-L152RE, and NUCLEO-L476RG boards. Additionally, it supports USI LoRaWAN technology modules through the I-NUCLEO-LRWAN1 expansion board.
Developers can optimize the performance and functionality of IoT devices to fully leverage all LoRaWAN services including connectivity, wireless identification, and GPS-free positioning through over 800 types of STM32 devices and approximately 300 types of ultra-low-power STM32 product families, thereby benefiting from exceptional flexibility.

ST Adds Sigfox Package to STM32 for Long-Range/Low-Power Wireless Network Connectivity
STMicroelectronics (ST) has added a Sigfox package to the STM32 software ecosystem. This package enables simplified development and enhances flexibility in connecting long-range, low-power wireless networks and IoT devices. The new X-CUBE-SFOX package is compatible with ST's B-L072Z-LRWAN1 Discovery Kit, which supports LoRa communication through the embedded software I-CUBE-LRWAN. Developers can choose one of these two LPWAN (Low-Power Wide Area Network) technologies and work on the same hardware, and product development is also possible that uses both protocols or selectively employs them. This Discovery Kit is comprised of Murata's CMWX1ZZABZ-091 module driven by the microcontroller STM32L072 and Semtech's sub-GHz wireless transceiver SX1276, and allows adding sensor functionality or capabilities of other IoT devices through Arduino headers.

SK Telecom and Busan Transportation Corporation to Safely Use IoT Technology on Urban Railways
SK텔레콤은 부산교통공사와 함께 첨단 IoT 및 빅데이터 기술을 활용해 도시철도를 더욱 안전하게 관리해 나가기로 했다. SK텔레콤은 부산교통공사와 ‘스마트도시철도 표준모델’ 개발과 실증 사업을 추진하는 양해각서를 체결했다고 15일 밝혔다. 양사는 오는 4월부터 약 2년동안 ‘철도 IoT센서’를 부산 지하철 역사 등에 구축해 실시간으로 시설물을 모니터링한다. 각 센서는 SK텔레콤의 로라(LoRa)망을 활용한다.
