Dell EMC has announced software OS updates for its flagship mid-range storage products, 'Unity' and 'SC Series'. With these new OS updates, Dell EMC plans to significantly improve the performance, capacity, data protection, and availability of the Unity and SC Series to support customers in modernizing their data centers, while continuing its ongoing investment and innovation in the mid-range storage portfolio.

The newly released operating software is 'Unity OE (Operating Environment) 4.4' and 'SCOS (Storage Center Operating System) 7.3', respectively, which can be installed on Dell EMC Unity and SC Series all-flash and hybrid storage arrays. Any customer subscribed to Dell EMC's customized customer support service, 'Dell ProSupport,' can receive a new OS upgrade free of charge without system interruption.
Enhance File Replication, Data Mobility, and Security Features with 'Unity OE 4.4'
Unity is Dell EMC's flagship mid-range storage product that enables rapid installation and easy operation, as well as seamless tiering of integrated storage workloads to the cloud. Two years after its launch in May 2016, over 1 exabyte of raw flash storage capacity has been shipped. The new OS Unity OE 4.4 enhances file replication, data mobility, and security features to ensure the stable operation of enterprise applications.

▲ Array-based File Replication: Performs rapid recovery using 'Metrosync,' a new array-based file replication solution, and shortens NAS backup times by improving performance while reducing WAN/LAN network congestion through support for 'Direct Attach NDMP (2-way Network Data Management Protocol).' ▲ Data Mobility: Equipped with a data migration feature that directly migrates block data from third-party storage arrays to Dell EMC Unity. ▲ Enhanced Security: Improved LDAP/AD capabilities for performance, availability, and search flexibility in Microsoft environments.

In particular, with the addition of the MetroSync file replication feature, Dell EMC Unity now allows users to select synchronous and asynchronous block and file replication options across all hybrid and all-flash configurations. Through such extensive replication options, the Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of transaction application data have been improved, and long-distance disaster recovery as well as data collection and distribution capabilities have also been enhanced.
SC Series Features Improved via 'SCOS 7.3' Update
Dell EMC has implemented overall code optimization for its storage software 'SCOS' to enhance performance and increase efficiency in SC Series hybrid and all-flash arrays, while also improving storage management, analytics, and monitoring capabilities. The key features of the 'SCOS 7.3' update are as follows.

▲ Improved IOPS: Up to 2.2 million IOPS per array, and over 20 million IOPS in federated multi-array environments. Max IOPS performance more than doubled across all latest SC array models. Mixed workload IOPS increased by 50,000–100,000 across all SC arrays compared to previous versions. ▲ Improved management capabilities in both single and multi-array environments: The newly introduced Unisphere for the SC Series features the same design as Unisphere for Unity and an HTML5-based web UI. It provides simple and automated storage management capabilities. ▲ Simple and cost-effective upgrades and expansion: Max capacity doubled per array. The 'SC4020' supports Data-in-place (DIP) functionality, providing a cost-effective option for customers wishing to migrate data to new SC models. Federation and replication are possible between the 'SCv2000' and other SC series arrays. ▲ Enterprise-grade efficiency and availability: Provides a future-proof solution by supporting 100Gb and 25Gb iSCSI network hardware. Support for distributed sparing enhances I/O efficiency and improves data rebuilding performance by up to 500%. Improved 'Live Volume' features designed to reduce latency and decrease network traffic in high-availability environments.

According to Dell EMC's own test results, upgrading to SCOS 7.3 resulted in a performance improvement of approximately 33% to 54% for customers in real-world business applications such as VDI (Desktop Virtualization) and SQL OLTP (Online Transaction Processing).
