Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is quickly becoming established as an IoT wireless protocol.

According to a 2018 Bluetooth market survey, Bluetooth device shipments are expected to exceed 5 billion units by 2022, with 97% of them featuring Bluetooth Low Energy technology. The introduction of Bluetooth Mesh and the advancement of Bluetooth 5 technology are creating new market opportunities across building automation, sensor networks, and other IoT solutions.

At Bluetooth World on the 20th, Arm introduced the Arm Mbed Cordio Stack, an open source low-power Bluetooth software stack to further enhance developer support.

Bluetooth 5 supports twice the data rate, four times the range, and eight times the broadcast capability of the previous version, Bluetooth 4.2. The Arm Cordio BLE stack is integrated with Mbed OS, a free, open-source embedded operating system. The Arm Mbed ecosystem of over 350,000 developers can innovate with a full Bluetooth 5 stack from the start, as well as access future Bluetooth Mesh through Mbed OS.

This solution gives semiconductor partners access to the Bluetooth 5 stack, available as part of Mbed OS products, and allows porting to additional platforms. The open-source Bluetooth 5 stack eliminates the risk of relying on a single vendor and allows for source code modifications to address evolving requirements.

The addition of Bluetooth 5 to Mbed OS connectivity options (Thread, Wi-Fi, 6LoWPAN, LoRa, and cellular) empowers developers to build flexible and secure wireless IoT solutions tailored to the market. These devices are securely connected and managed through the Pelion IoT Platform, reducing implementation complexity and unlocking value from IoT.

By offering this broad range of options, Arm opens the market to more developers and enterprises, enabling partners to focus on innovation, differentiation, and value creation through their own IoT solutions.

The Arm Mbed Cordio Stack is now available globally, and Arm Mbed Cordio Bluetooth Mesh is expected to be available in Q1 2019.
