New PowerVR Series 6 Launch: Delivering Innovative GPU Performance with 4 Cluster Cores
June 13, 2012 – Imagination Technologies ( www.imgtec.com ), a leading company in the field of semiconductor technology for multimedia and communications, announced today that it has released new IP cores for its PowerVR Series 6 GPU core family.
The newly introduced products are the PowerVR G6230 and G6430 GPU IP cores, the latest additions to the PowerVR Series 6 GPU core lineup, which has shown steady growth since its launch. These products are characterized by providing high computational efficiency while minimizing power and bandwidth requirements. In particular, the PowerVR G6230 and G6430, developed as successors to the G6200 and G6400 cores, feature two '2-cluster' and two '4-cluster' IP cores, respectively, offering enhanced design capabilities.
The PowerVR G6200 and G6400 products were developed based on '2-cluster' and '4-cluster' architectures to deliver maximum performance in the smallest possible size. Their successors, the PowerVR G6230 and G6430, provide maximum performance while reducing power consumption through an additional size.
Tony King-Smith, Vice President of Marketing at Imagination, emphasized, “The PowerVR Series 6 features four complete cores that can meet the diverse demands of the market. This innovative product sets a new standard for high-performance and ultra-low-power GPU cores,” adding, “Through the G6200, G6230, G6400, and G6430 product families, Imagination provides the power ratio, performance, and space suitable for the differentiated designs desired by key customers.”
PowerVR Series 6 is based on the highly scalable 'Rogue' architecture. Imagination plans to announce additional new core products that provide optimal performance, enabling its customers seeking to develop graphics IP solutions to launch more differentiated products as quickly as possible.

The PowerVR Rogue architecture, based on compute clusters with excellent scalability, is designed to meet demanding market requirements ranging from mobile devices—such as smartphones, tablet PCs, game consoles, automobiles, and TVs—to high-performance embedded graphics. PowerVR G62xx and G64xx, utilizing programmable compute arrays, provide high compute power efficiency while minimizing bandwidth utilization and power consumption. PowerVR G62xx and G64xx feature two and four compute clusters, respectively.
The PowerVR Series 6 GPU cores deliver computational performance exceeding 100 gigaflops (GFLOPS) and reaching astonishing teraflops (TFLOPS). Consequently, they possess top-tier graphics performance for mobile devices as well as high-end computing and graphics solutions. Therefore, they can be utilized in the latest smartphones, tablet PCs, and TVs, and provide the fill rate required for multi-screen support, which is a recent demand in the automotive industry.
Rogue satisfies the requirements of computation APIs such as OpenCL 1.x and Renderscript Compute, and balances power consumption and performance across devices ranging from mobile to embedded devices. All products in the PowerVR Series 6 family support all of the latest graphics API features, including the next-generation OpenGL ES API*, OpenGL 3.x/4.x, and DirectX 10, and some products are extended with full WHQL-compliant DirectX 11.1 features.
The PowerVR Series 6 family provides a highly advanced compute cluster architecture and high-efficiency compression technologies, such as lossless image and parameter compression, and the widely used PVRTC2™ texture compression. Along with this, it offers new technologies such as an improved scheduling architecture, a dedicated housekeeping processor based on Imagination's Meta technology, and a next-generation Tile Based Deferred Rendering (TBDR) architecture. These new technologies complete an architecture with flexibility and durability in processing speed by providing the best performance per unit area (mm²) and power (mW) while consuming only the industry's lowest memory bandwidth.
