Mouser Electronics is supplying LTE-M expansion kits from Silicon Labs and Digi International. These LTE-M expansion kits are new expansion kits designed to support the development of cellular IoT applications, featuring ultra-low power application performance and seamless connectivity to the cloud.

The Silicon Labs LTE-M expansion kit, exclusively distributed by Mouser, consists of the Silicon Labs EXP board and the EFM32 Giant Gecko 11 Starter Kit (sold separately). The EXP board includes a pre-certified Digi XBee3 LTE-M modem embedded module that connects to the cloud via an LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network). Since the EXP board is compatible with all Digi XBee through-hole modules, various wireless connectivity options such as Zigbee, Wi-Fi, 3G, and LTE cellular can be used. The Giant Gecko 11 microcontroller is code compatible with the entire Gecko microcontroller family, the Wireless Gecko SoC, and pre-certified modules.

Engineers can easily add features and configure and inspect XBee3 modules using standard Digi XBee API frameworks, AT commands, MicroPython, and XCTU software tools. Digi XBee3 modules equipped with Digi Remote Manager are easily configured and controlled via a simple central platform. It also features the security, identity, and privacy capabilities of the built-in Digi Trust Fence, which utilizes over 175 control units to protect systems from emerging cyber threats.

Silicon Labs’ EFM32 Giant Gecko 11 Starter Kit is designed based on the ultra-low-power EFM32 Giant Gecko Series 1 microcontroller and provides one 32-bit Arm Cortex-M4 core, 2MB of flash memory, and 512MB of RAM. The starter kit includes sensors and peripherals to demonstrate the microcontroller’s capabilities and serve as a starting point for application development. Equipped with an onboard SEGGER J-Link debugger and an advanced energy monitoring system, the Giant Gecko 11 performs various functions, such as application programming, debugging, and real-time current flow monitoring, without the need for external tools.

The LTE-M expansion kit consists of an onboard GPS, user-selectable high/low power modes, and test pins for all XBee3 pins. It also includes an LTE-M patch antenna, a globally usable nano SIM card (1MB of data for prototyping), and a software demo ready for use with the Giant Gecko 11 Starter Kit.
