New SafeAssure Automotive Solution for System-Level Safety Standard Compliance Announced
June 21, 2012, Seoul, Korea – Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL, www.freescale.com ) helps automotive design companies reduce the complexity and development time required to build functionally safe systems compliant with ISO 26262 standards. Freescale’s new SafeAssure solution consists of the Qorivva MPC574xP 32-bit MCU (microcontroller) and SBC (system-based chip) MC33906/7/8 product families, enabling the development of automotive systems that support all ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Levels), including the most stringent ASIL D. Applications that can utilize this solution include electric power steering, electronic stability control, vehicle dynamics and chassis control, safety zone control, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot detection.
The Qorivva MPC574xP MCU and MC33906/7/8 SBC product families were designed from the ground up to enable system manufacturers to easily achieve compliance with functional safety standards by providing the following features.
• Integrated safety architecture within the hardware
• Included safety software
• Comprehensive support infrastructure capable of reducing development time
The Freescale SafeAssure program includes a wide selection of MCUs, sensors, and analog ICs, along with support including training, safety resources, and technical assistance for designing functionally safe applications.
"Freescale helps developers implement advanced safety performance in their systems while mitigating the complexity required to achieve safety standard compliance through a system-level approach," said Gavin Woods, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Freescale's Analog and Mixed Signal Products business unit. "Freescale's next-generation SBCs, backed by the Freescale SafeAssure program and featuring the latest Qorivva MCUs, help customers achieve system-level functional safety objectives."
As consumer awareness and legal requirements drive the enhancement of automotive safety, automotive OEMs are facing increasing complexity at the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) level. Using Freescale SBC devices with the MPC574xP MCU simplifies system design and optimizes interactions at the monitoring, diagnostic, and software architecture levels, and each device features its own fail-safe verification mechanism.
MPC574xP MCU: Performance and Safety
The Qorivva MPC574xP MCU provides the performance and capabilities required to meet functional safety standards up to ISO 26262 ASIL D. Operating at up to 180 MHz, the Qorivva MCU is manufactured using a 55 nm process and features an integrated safety architecture, dual-core latency lockstep, and additional on-chip redundancy. This product can operate in extreme operating environments, such as electric power steering systems, that require junction temperatures of up to 165 degrees Celsius.
The MPC574xP, which integrates multiple functions into a single safety platform, provides approximately twice the memory, performance, and motor control capabilities compared to Freescale's previous generation products. In addition, it offers pin compatibility, allowing existing Freescale MCU customers to upgrade with minimal hardware and software changes, thereby shortening time-to-market and the overall development cycle. This device continues Freescale's tradition of supplying dual-core lockstep MCUs to the automotive market for over a decade.
MC33906/7/8 SBC: Power and Safety
The SBC device supplies power to the MCU and other system loads and optimizes energy consumption through low-power sleep modes. The device also includes CAN and LIN physical layers compliant with ISO 11898-2-5 and LIN 2.1/J2602-2 standards, safety functions, and serial peripheral interfaces that support control and diagnostics of the MCU.
The pin-compatible MC33906/7/8 product family is Freescale's latest generation SBC solution, featuring a DC/DC switching regulator capable of optimizing energy efficiency. An optional boost mode allows the system to remain available even during engine cranking pulses. Additionally, an ultra-low power mode is designed to significantly reduce current consumption and optimize restart times. Like the previous generation, the new SBC is designed to meet the recent requirements of automotive OEMs for electromagnetic compatibility.
The MC33906/7/8 device is Freescale's first analog solution developed to meet ASIL D requirements. This product includes various integrated safety features, such as monitoring of key analog parameters, a fault-tolerant state machine, and advanced monitoring capabilities. Combining these features with a dual-core lockstep MCU can simplify system design and reduce software complexity.
This SBC product family is part of Freescale’s Energy Saving Solutions Program, meaning the product is designed to assure customers that Freescale has applied the appropriate combination of technologies and techniques to achieve optimal energy savings suitable for specific application areas. This mark symbolizes Freescale’s expertise in providing products optimized to deliver best performance within the limited energy and power constraints of embedded environments.
Comprehensive development support
Support includes functional safety support materials for the device, such as the MPC574xP AUTOSAR safety MCAL and safety documentation, safety application guides, and analyses of failure modes, effects, and diagnostics. Furthermore, Freescale, in collaboration with third-party partners, has established a comprehensive functional safety integration system that includes RTOS, integration tools, training, and certification support, all designed to guide customers through the end-product certification process.
