Plan for Intensive Development of Smart City-Based Convergence Industries

A Technopark is being established in Sejong Special Self-Governing City to systematically support local technology innovation activities and promote balanced national development by fostering local industries and excellent companies. As a hub for technology innovation where companies, universities, research institutes, and local governments jointly carry out projects, the Technopark is a place that promotes innovative growth by fostering local industries and small and medium-sized enterprises.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups approved the designation of Sejong Special Self-Governing City as the project implementer for Sejong Technopark on November 28. As a result of carrying out the designation procedures, which included written and on-site inspections by the Sejong Technopark Evaluation Committee, presentation evaluations, consultations with relevant ministries, and deliberations by the Development Committee, the feasibility of the establishment and business was recognized, leading to the designation as a Technopark.
A total project cost of approximately 41 billion won will be invested in Sejong Technopark, which will be constructed in the Jochiwon area from next year to 2023 with two underground floors and eight above-ground floors.

If Sejong Technopark is established, it is expected to serve as a hub for technology innovation for small and medium-sized enterprises in the region by linking with Sejong SB Plaza, Startup Kium Center, and the Smart City National Industrial Complex. Furthermore, it is expected to create synergy effects as a hub for industrial development and innovative growth in the central region, connecting the Chungcheong region with nearby Daedeok Research Complex, Osong BT, and Cheonan-Asan IT clusters.

Sejong City plans to intensively foster smart city-based convergence industries related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as autonomous vehicles, as regional specialized industries in conjunction with the Smart City National Pilot City in the 5-1 Living Area within the new city.

Bae Ji-cheol, Director General of Regional Enterprise Policy at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, stated, “The designation of Sejong Technopark signifies the completion of technopark establishment in all 17 cities and provinces nationwide.” He added, “We plan to actively support the creation of new regional growth engines by further strengthening technology exchange and cooperation so that technoparks can become hubs for regional innovation, and by fostering joint R&D and commercialization among industry, academia, and research institutes.”

Sejong City Mayor Lee Chun-hee stated, “Sejong Technopark is a hub for technology innovation for local small and medium-sized enterprises that can not only strengthen self-sufficiency but also proactively respond to the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” adding, “Through this designation, we will build a network among technoparks nationwide to foster local industries more efficiently.”
