Dual Magnetic Sensor for Safety-Sensitive Vehicle Engine Throttle Applications Announced
June 27, 2012, Seoul – NXP Semiconductors NV today announced the KMA220, a dual magnetic sensor developed for all automotive applications requiring mechanical angle measurement. By integrating two sensors within a single package, it is ideal for throttle control units that require redundant system solutions. Operating in a simple disk magnet configuration without the need for PCBs or external components, the KMA220 offers a unique solution for the automotive market.
The KMA220 is fully tuned and ready for immediate use, integrating three capacitors in addition to two sensor dies and two signal conditioning ASICs. Combined with its dual characteristics, this enables customers to reduce system costs and simplify the assembly process. To achieve throttle device redundancy, automotive manufacturers previously had to install two single sensors on a single lead frame or PCB and secure them properly, typically requiring expensive ring magnet configurations to operate. With the dual KMA220 sensors, a single, simple installation is required.
The KMA220 utilizes NXP’s proprietary ABCD9 technology, a state-of-the-art analog mixed-signal integration technology for automotive platforms. Based on NXP’s CMOS 14 process technology, this technology significantly improves performance compared to previous sensors employing integrated ASICs. The KMA220 has also completed verification according to the new HMM (Human Metal Model) with excellent ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection and EMC performance.
"Building on the success of the KMA210, the KMA220 is a new addition to our existing position sensor family for the automotive industry, offering customers a package that no other company can provide. As the next step, we plan to release a single sensor product in the same package, which means customers can easily select and install the optimal product for their own products because they can utilize the same assembly process for all devices," explained Stephan zur Verth, Vice President of NXP Semiconductors and General Manager of the Sensor Business Unit.
NXP's automotive sensor product family is highly durable, capable of operating at temperatures up to 160 degrees Celsius (the industry average is 150 degrees Celsius). This is essential for use in Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) units that calculate each temperature change.
