Siemens PLM Software announced on the 19th that it has acquired COMSA Computer und Software GmbH, known for developing electrical system design and wire harness engineering software.
Com's LDorado product family, based in Munich, Germany, ranks first in the German automotive harness design and engineering software sector.

COM is a company with an excellent product portfolio, expertise dedicated to standard development, and a solid market position. With this acquisition, COM's personnel and technology will be incorporated into Siemens PLM Software's Mentor business unit. With this, Siemens is now able to add core harness engineering and design data analysis capabilities to its product portfolio.

Tony Hemmelgarn, President and CEO of Siemens PLM Software, assessed the value of the acquisition, stating, “The acquisition of COMSA is part of Siemens’ continued investment in technology for the automotive industry,” and “By integrating the solutions and expertise of Siemens and COMSA, we have been able to build unrivaled capabilities in the industry.”

"In addition, Siemens stated, 'Through this collaboration, Siemens has strengthened its electrical system and harness engineering capabilities necessary to meet the development demands of electric and autonomous vehicles,' adding, 'We will showcase the deep integrated technical capabilities required by COM and all of Siemens' global customers.'"

According to Bishop and Associates, a market research firm specializing in electronic connectors, the global cable assembly market was worth $155 billion in 2017, with 30% of that coming from the automotive market.

"A Cowen Research official said, 'Wiring harnesses are the third most expensive part of a car after the engine and chassis,' adding, 'Harnesses are made one at a time and account for 50% of the labor costs of producing a vehicle.'"

He also explained, "The wiring harness is the heaviest part after the chassis and engine," adding, "Technology to reduce this weight is directly linked to improved fuel efficiency."

Through this acquisition, Siemens plans to expand its new product portfolio globally to address innovations in the automotive harness industry, driven by megatrends such as autonomous and electric vehicles.r />
Capital Software, part of the Mentor Graphics portfolio acquired by Siemens, covers a wide range of fields, from electrical and electronic architecture development to electrical system design and services, and wire harness design and manufacturing.

Meanwhile, this acquisition was completed on December 3, 2018, and the terms of the acquisition are undisclosed.
