The Korea Institute of Materials Science has elucidated the long-term thermal degradation mechanism of aluminum materials used in spent nuclear fuel dry storage containers at the nano scale. Through thermal aging experiments lasting up to 10,000 hours, the institute has developed technology to predict material property changes decades into the future through short-term high-temperature testing. This will be utilized in evaluating long-term safety of domestic dry storage systems and establishing licensing standards.
